Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings reposted this
This weekend, over 80 scientists and engineers from around the world were on solutions to pressing sustainability issues. As a participant of the #Sciathon competition, our team focused on an often overlooked topic of energy-efficiency in software. With much of modern IT infrastructure being built upon a handful of open source libraries, even a mere 1% gain in efficiency has the potential to reduce global power consumption by an amount equivalent to 4 large power plants (~27 TWh per year). Over the course of 48 hours, our diverse team consisting of Rebecca Meissner, Michael Gatchell, Yevhen F., Enrique Rozas Garcia, Jose David Bermudez Perez, Nicola Cerutti, PhD, José Mejía, David Paulovics, Philine van Vliet, Brian Njoroge, and Johannes Postler shared their thoughts and ideas to come up with a set of strategies and recommendations backed up by two proofs of concept. We thank Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and organizers, especially Christoph Schumacher, for providing a platform for a truly global brainstorming event, with members of our team working together from Austria, Colombia, France, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, the UK, and USA. Although 48 hours is not enough to tackle the full scale of these issues, having this platform to raise awareness and promote sustainable coding is on its own an incredible starting point. Congratulations to all participants of the 4th Lindau Online Sciathon! 🥳 All ten groups who started the weekend made it to the finish line. It’s quite amazing: More than 80 researchers from around the world came together to work on ideas initially pitched by Lindau Alumni. The variety of ideas to come out of the weekend is astonishing. Equally amazing is the commitment and creativity by the Lindau Alumni and #LINO24 Young Scientists. On Friday, they met, often for the first time as teams were put together on a first-come, first-served basis. They quickly organized working groups, collaborated across a multitude of time zones and disciplines, and not only developed ideas, but wrote and edited a paper and on top of it all even produced informative, often entertaining videos on their project idea. An expert jury a scientific expert jury chaired by Heiner Linke, Scientific Co-Chair of the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, and including Kiana Aran (UCSD), Jürgen Kluge (Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings), Lindau Alumnus Karl-Georg Schlesinger, will now evaluate the results of the weekend and will select the most promising groups for the Scaithon Forum during #LINO24.
