Medal of Honor awarded to UWE President
We are pleased to share that Dr. Anne Nègre, President of University Women Europe, is recently awarded with the “Medal of Honor” from the Award Committee of the Conference of International Non Governmental Organisations of the Council of Europe (CoE) “for the constant and exemplary commitment of Mrs. Negre to the associations for solidarity, European citizenship, understanding and approaches between peoples, civil society and human rights”.
This medal was given by Mr. Gerhard Ermischer, President of the Conference of INGOs of the CoE on the 5th October 2022 in Strasbourg, France.

Professional Certificate In Strategic Education Planning

The costs of gender-based violence in the European Union
Although a price cannot be put on women’s lives and suffering, estimating the lost economic output and public spending on health, legal, social and specialised services with regard to gender-based violence can create a better understanding of the extent and associated costs of this phenomenon.
Gender-based violence is a widespread phenomenon in the European Union, affecting women disproportionally – in 2012, one in three women aged 15 or over experienced physical and/or sexual violence.
“Recently, some Members States of CoE and EU have started to evaluate the cost of violence against women. The sums are very important with the lack of success that we know. Moreover, in these reports that I was able to read, the methodology was specific to each state so the comparisons were difficult. But it was a start to see that prevention is essential because it is effective and costs less. While knowing that the physical and psychological damages are difficult to quantify in money and that they are obviously less important in the framework of prior actions to stop violence against women.

This report focuses on updating estimates of the costs of gender-based and intimate partner violence in the United Kingdom in 2019. These estimates are then extrapolated from the United Kingdom to EU Member States. This updated study on the costs of gender-based violence in the EU is accompanied by a critical review of studies carried out within the EU to estimate the costs of gender-based and intimate partner violence that have been published since EIGE’s 2014 study. This review provides a set of lessons learned for future costing studies at European level and recommendations for estimating the costs of gender-based violence at Member State and EU levels.
This study is accompanied by a technical report, which provides details on the method and data used for the cost estimation for the UK case study, as well as the extrapolation of the results to the EU Member States.

Call for participants: supporting civil society organisations in raising awareness on the Istanbul Convention
The Council of Europe in co-operation with the Women Against Violence Europe Network (WAVE) and UN Women are organising an on-line event with the participation of civil society organisations from all over Europe.
The main aims of the event are to:
- promote and answer questions related to a new methodology providing advocacy resources and tools to support civil society organisations in promoting the values, aims and provisions of the Council of Europe the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, known as the Istanbul Convention;
- encourage broad participation in the Council of Europe call for proposals from non-governmental organisations working in Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania or the Slovak Republic
The event will take place on 14 September 2022, at 09:30-12:00 CET.
The meeting will be hosted by the BlueJeans videoconferencing platform and the working language will be English.

European Women Pharmacists Meeting in Münster
Deutscher Akademikerinnenbund e.V. (DAB) is pleased to invite you to the 16th European Women Pharmacists Meeting on 3.09.2022 in Münster. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Sustainable Practice in Pharmacy” and will feature lectures on green initiatives in all pharmaceutical branches by speakers from Germany, Romania, England, Iceland and the Netherlands.
The conference is aimed at pharmacists, scientists and engineers with a connection to pharmacy and/or sustainable technologies. Marie Curie FRIAS Cofund Fellowships 2023/24
With the Marie Skłodowska-Curie FRIAS COFUND Fellowship Programme up to 15 fellowships per year (juniors and seniors) are available to researchers from all nationalities and disciplines giving the opportunity of spending three to twelve months working on their own research project at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), the international research college of the University of Freiburg.
» Junior fellowships (completed PhD plus one to six years of post-doctoral experience)
(12-month fellowships between September 1 st, 2023 and August 31st, 2024)
» Senior fellowships (completed PhD plus a minimum of six years of post-doctoral experience or a tenured professorship or equivalent permanent position)
(3- to 10-month fellowships between September 1 st, 2023 and August 31st, 2024)
Fellowships of 3 to 10 months in the Senior scheme and of 12 months in the Junior scheme may be applied for. They will allow researchers to conduct their own research projects. FRIAS offers the opportunity for FCFP Junior Fellows to prolong the fellowship for up to three months for secondments in and collaboration with non-academic partner institutions in Freiburg and the region. Junior Fellows must apply for this option eight months into their fellowship.
SELECTION CRITERIA
In general, all fellowships will be awarded to individuals with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process (expected success rate: ~15% of eligible applications). The all-important selection criterion is the academic excellence of both the applicant and the project proposal. Personal qualifications with regard to experience and capability to conduct the research project will also be taken into account during the evaluation of the applications.

According to the EU mobility rule, applicants may not (a) have resided or (b) have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than a total of 12 months during the 3-year period prior to the application deadline. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
FRIAS is particularly interested in applications from female candidates for this position and therefore, strongly encourages women to apply.
FELLOWSHIP FUNDING
Successful applicants will become FRIAS fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the requested funding period. Fellows without a work contract at their home institution will obtain an attractive salary (Junior: ca. 4.600 € per month pre-tax; Senior: W3-equivalent professorial salary, ca. 7.000 € per month pre-tax). Senior fellows who stay on paid leave of absence from their home institution during the time of the fellowship will instead receive an additional contract as a guest professor at the University of Freiburg (ca. 3.050 € per month pre-tax) to compensate them for the extra costs of their stay in Freiburg. Fellows accompanied by at least one child receive an additional monthly family allowance of 250 €. Each fellow will receive a research cost contribution (theoretical sciences: up to 450 € per month, experimental sciences: up to 1.050 € per month). All fellows will have at their disposal a budget for individual training, a travel allowance to cover the costs of the inbound and outbound journey and a mobility allowance to cover relocation costs.
Career guidance is offered to each Junior fellow. Since one of the aims of FRIAS is to foster cross-disciplinary communication, full-time presence at FRIAS is mandatory.
The FCFP call for applications is co-financed by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, People, Co-funding of regional, national and international programs (COFUND)” and the State of Baden-Württemberg. The rules and ethical principles for Horizon 2020 and the state regulations apply.
The Marie S. Curie Actions pay particular attention to physical accessibility and inclusion of researchers and provide financial support by means of a Special Needs Lump Sum Allowance (SNLS) for recruited researchers with disabilities whose long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments are such that their participation in the FCFP would not be possible without extra financial support.

The constitutional right to abortion erased in USA
On June 24th, six judges of the Supreme Court of the United States decided to reverse the Roe v Wade decision authorizing abortion, the 1973 case that legalised abortion nationwide, and Planned Parenthood v Casey, the decision that extended it (with modifications) in 1992. The Supreme Court has never before withdrawn a constitutional right that so many Americans have relied upon for so long.

The Turkish Cypriot Association of University Women (TCAUW) is happy to host the UWE Annual General Meeting 2022. The city of Kyrenia is the hidden jewel of the Mediterranean full of magnificent historical monuments that provide timeless glimpses of glorious days gone by. The Kyrenia Harbour is a great example of the town’s rich history, with streets of old Kyrenia town exuding Ottoman architecture, leading up to the Venetian-built Kyrenia Castle beautifully towering over the harbour. The list continues with the breath-taking St. Hilarion Castle up on the mountain top and the Bellapais Abbey in set in one of the most beautiful villages on the island, as well as museums housing relics of the past.

Kyrenia city can be reached by individual or collective taxi services that can be organised by your hotel or that can be taken once you land at the two international airports (ERCAN and LARNACA) which have several daily flights to Cyprus. Sunday, 25 September: KYRENIA & NICOSIA Tour – 35 EUR (including transport & lunch)
After departing from the hotel we drive to the beautiful village of Bellapais where the ‘Bellapais Monastery’ is located. This monastery is one of the most amazing ones with its architecture and location. We walk to the house of ‘Laurence Durell’ who lived in this village and wrote his famous book called ‘The Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’. We’ll then drive to Kyrenia centre and visit the ‘Kyrenia Castle’ which is located by the marina. It was built by Byzantines and many additions were made by Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans, and by English. ‘The Shipwreck Museum’ is located in the castle and must be visited. A shipwreck, amphoras, almonds, fig seeds and many other objects are been exhibited which all date back to 300BC. After a short walk in the marina we hop on our bus and drive to Nicosia.
We drive to the walled city of Nicosia which has been the capital of the island since 11th century. We’ll walk to the city centre from ‘Kyrenia Gate’ on foot. This gate is one of the 3 gates which surrounds the walled city of Nicosia. We stop at ‘Dr. Fazıl Kucuk Museum’ who was the Vice President of Cyprus when Republic of Cyprus was formed in 1960. We pass by ‘Samanbahce Houses’ which were the first social houses that were built for the people who were in need in 1900. We walk to ‘Venetian Column’ which is located in the centre of the city. ‘St. Sophia Cathedral’ (Selimiye Mosque) is one of the nicest gothic style buildings that was built by Lusignans. We walk to ‘Buyuk Han’ which was built in 1572 by the Ottomans and have our lunch in ‘Buyuk Han’. After some free time on our way to the bus we pass by ‘Dervish Pasa Mansion’ and visit the place which will be the last stop of the day.
