ExtraEnergy Pedelec and E-Bike Magazine no. 11

The ExtraEnergy Pedelec and E-Bike Magazine no. 11 in English, German and Chinese. Including 26 detailed test results. The key-issues are on off-road pedelecs, prototypes, pre-production bikes on test and LEV components.

Gnarly climbs and flowing singletrack with technical sections: after 23 years of testing e-bike and pedelec technology, ExtraEnergy has extended its ride testing with, for the first time, an extra test for off-road pedelecs.

Test winners
Hercules Jarvis, test winner in the Sport Offroad category, and personal favourite hardtail of World Champion Marco Hösel, has triumphed over vehicles costing more than twice as much. Gears, geometry, drive and agility on the trail all impressed. A fine all-round hardtail pedelec with top class price-performance ratio.

Test winner in product category Lifestyle Pedelec became blueLabel-PONY touring HS. A compact city run-about which assists up to 45 km/h and can be easily taken with you in a caravan or mobile home. It is a bike for anyone who wants to be able to mix it with the traffic in town, and who doesn´t want to be without their own pedelec at weekends or on holiday, where with a `Tour` average speed of 29.4 km/h it´ll swiftly transport you between the most scenic attractions.

The Kalkhoff Endeavour Impulse S11 Premium positively flew over the `Tour` test circuit, with an average speed of 31.7 km/h. A swift pedelec for fast bike rides or trips to the office.  It´s multifunctional display gives an incentive to CO2-free electricity. Business Pedelec test winner.

With red highlights on a silver frame, the Kettler Traveller E-Light is a stylish urban eye-catcher. Dynamic and chic, it dashed to test victory in the Easy Pedelecs category.

Good, safe, fast: a bike of superlatives. Riding slowly requires huge amounts of self-restraint. „A beast of a bike which is still surprisingly good to ride even without the motor“ was the test riders´ verdict.

Pegasus-Premio E10: a test rider favourite and Family Pedelec test winner. And it could also boast a K-factor (customer wish fulfilment factor) of 10 in the Easy Pedelec product category. A bike for all occasions, and delightfully understated.

The Raleigh Dover Impulse XXL 8R is the bike with the highest payload rating in this test, at 142.7 kg. A heavyweight which packs a real punch. On the Tour circuit and in its highest power assist mode, it travelled 80.4 km. Good assistance in all terrain; City Comfort test winner.

A compact bike needs to be handy and practical. From leisurely cycle touring to brisk riding, the little runabout Hartje I:SY proved itself an ever reliable companion and took the test victory in the Compact category.

The heavy Utopia Kranich distinguishs itself as a high capacity distance runner par excellence, especially for really long journeys. The battery provided the motor with a full 118 km- worth of power on the Tour circuit. The 2015 model is available for 3,779 Euro instead of 5,203 Euro. For buying a battery separately the price is now 780 rather than 740 Euro, though.

Prototypes and pre-production bikes on test
For the Autumn 2014 Test, ExtraEnergy once again tested numerous pre-production and prototype bikes. This included a pre-production version of A2B Entz Deluxe with CONTI eBIKE SYSTEM, a pre-production sample of Binova GmbH and a Klaxon pedelec with Zehus drive: a special case.

This eleventh edition is supplemented with recollections and observations from Hannes Neupert (president ExtraEnergy e.V.) on BionX - a pedelec pioneer looking to the future.

Information leads to greater understanding, fairer competition and finally, to enhanced safety and quality. In this, the eleventh issue, we have put a special emphasis on explaining the set-up, process and methology of the testing, for which customer wishes and product categories are of central importance.

About ExtraEnergy Test GmbH
ExtraEnergy Test GmbH is a subsidiary of ExtraEnergy e.V.. Since 2012, the ExtraEnergy Test GmbH is responsible for carrying out ExtraEnergy´s independent pedelec and e-bike tests.

The ExtraEnergy Test verdict is a recognised marker of a good product, offering customers reliable guidance for their purchases. The flip side of independent buying advice is straight-talking warnings about substandard products.

About ExtraEnergy e.V.
ExtraEnergy e.V. has carried out independent e-bike and pedelec tests since 1992. Since then the organisation has established itself as the most influential information, user protection and promotional organisation for light electric vehicles (LEVs) worldwide.

The founders realised from the start that these vehicles need to be experienced first-hand. Since 1997 the Test IT Track has been on the road, and today has three units for the Test IT Show. ExtraEnergy is also rooted at its test facility in Tanna, where 23 years of test reports and LEV history are on display at the LEV Museum.

Other services on offer include presentations and exhibitions at trade and public shows, plus information distribution with the assistance of correspondents worldwide.

Alongside our physical presence, www.extraenergy.org provides a treasure-house of information online. With support from the European Union and the IEA (International Energy Agency), in 2012 the Go Pedelec! Handbook was published in German, English, Dutch, Hungarian, Czech, Italian, Spanish and Chinese, including much new information and best practice studies for electric-assist two-wheelers.

As founding members of the EnergyBus and BATSO (Battery Safety Organisation) associations, ExtraEnergy is also active on both the ISO (International Standards Organisation) Standards Committee, with a focus on mechanical standardisation, and on the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and so helps set safety and communication standards for LEVs worldwide.
