Am 1. August 2015 ist im imai das Forschungsprojekt Die Medienkunstagentur 235 MEDIA gestartet, das von der Kunst- und Medienwissenschaftlerin Dr. Jessica Nitsche unter Mitarbeit von Angelika Gwozdz realisiert wird. Hiroko Myokam widmet sich innerhalb des Projekts dem Austausch zwischen 235 MEDIA und Protagonisten der japanischen Videokunst.
Das Forschungsprojekt hat zum Ziel, die Rolle von 235 MEDIA als Medienkunstagentur, die seit den frühen 1980er Jahren entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Entwicklung und internationale Verbreitung von Video- und Medienkunst hatte, erstmalig systematisch zu erforschen und medientheoretisch zu fundieren. Das imai bildet für dieses ambitionierte Vorhaben den idealen Standort, denn als die Stiftung im Jahr 2006 gegründet wurde, erhielt sie von 235 MEDIA deren immenses Archiv mit Video- und Medienkunst, Ausstellungsdokumentationen, anderen innovativen audiovisuellen Formaten und zahlreichen unveröffentlichten Materialien. So bietet das Medienkunstarchiv der Stiftung imai für die Umsetzung des Projekts einen unvergleichlichen und bislang wenig erforschten Fundus. The goal of the project is to systematically explore and ground in media theory the role of 235 MEDIA as a media art agency which since the early 1980s has had crucial impact on the development and international dissemination of video and media art. The imai is the perfect site for this ambitious undertaking as it inherited 235 MEDIA’s vast archive of video and media art, documentation of exhibitions and other audiovisual formats and various previously unpublished materials when it was founded in 2006. As such, the media art archive of the imai foundation offers an incomparable and hitherto barely explored basis for the realisation of the project. Am 24. und 25. September findet im Ludwig Forum Aachen die Konferenz Video Matters statt, die im Rahmen des dort angesiedelten Forschungsprojekts Videoarchiv organisiert wird. Dr. Renate Buschmann wird dort den Vortrag „The imai Foundation – Between Archive and Collection“ halten.
