The Centennial Hall – Our Congress Venue

The IFLA WLIC Congress will take place in the Centennial Hall in Wrocław this year. It is not a typical conference centre but a unique building which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006. Designed by urban architect Max Berg and opened in 1913, it includes a reinforced concrete structure with the largest span in the world. The cupola has an inner diameter of 69 m (226 ft) and is 42 m (138 ft) high. The symmetrical quatrefoil shape with a large circular central space can accommodate 7,000 seats. The dome itself is 23 m (75 ft) high and is made of steel and glass.
The Centennial Hall constitutes the most important work of Wrocław modernism, and is one of Wrocław's most important trademarks. The special atmosphere under the historical dome of the Centennial Hall makes events held on its premises exceptional. The building and surroundings are frequently visited by tourists and Wrocław residents. It lies close to other popular tourist attractions, such as the Wrocław Zoo, the Japanese Garden, and the Pergola with the Multimedia Fountain.
Public Libraries of Wrocław
The Mediateka is a department of the Municipal Public Library in Wrocław. Created in 2004 as a result of a contest organized by the Bertelsmann Foundation, it was the first Polish multimedia library for young people – fully computerized, with free access to the internet and the availability of both traditional as well as multimedia collections. That same year it received an honorary mention during the 9th edition of the national „Modernization of the Year” contest, and to this day remains an important and modern cultural institution, in which meetings, workshops, debates, and expositions take place.

The Grafit (Graphite) Library is also a department of the Municipal Public Library in Wrocław. The library, located in the Business Center, is fully computerized and gives access to the traditional and digital collections, with the possibility of online lending. The floor features a red ribbon – the sign of Wrocław’s libraries – which divides the space into squares. Its color contrasts with the dominating white. The library is split into zones for children, for seniors as well as for meetings, discussions and workshops. It is a modern cultural institution meeting the information, cultural and aesthetic needs of users.

In 2016, the Grafit Library was included in the list of 10 unusual and inspiring libraries in Poland prepared by the culture.pl portal.

Both libraries will be available for a visit as part of Wrocław’s Public Libraries Tour.
