Ausstellung / Exhibition

The daadgalerie presents two works by Mexican artist Teresa Margolles, created during her stay in Berlin. Margolles thematizes the organized drug war in her homeland and its associated violence and impacts on Mexican society. She works assiduously against the anonymization of death and the disappearing of bodies by ruthlessly confronting her audience with the traces of what people have left behind. Produced is a minimalist intervention: a cloth used to wipe up
the blood of a woman murdered on the street becomes a symbol for narratives laced with violence. Latin American migrants who Margolles met in Berlin have each embroidered a line in the cloth and then tell their own stories of migration. Ubiquitous in Latin American indigenous cultures, the tradition of embroidery serves here—formally reduced to an abstract line, but each with its own »handwriting«—as a meditative process for ensuing narratives.
In addition to the installation of the fabric and the stories woven into it, the exhibition includes a wall installation of hand-made clay tiles, created with material extracted from the Río Bravo and formed in the border town of Ciudad Juárez, both settings of traumatic experiences of escape.

»Dance as a Medium of Political Resistance, Transformation, and Healing«

Egyptian choreographer, dancer, and writer Nora Amin, Valeska Gert Visiting Professor, examined this semester the physicality of traumatic experiences and explored performative practices of re-enactment and representation. Students of the dance studies Master’s degree program at Freie Universität Berlin now present the results of their collaboration with Amin: they developed choreographies that either take a public stance toward trauma or evolve into an aesthetic sphere of connection, transcendence, and empowerment.
Since her directorial debut in 2000, Amin has been a key figure in new Egyptian dance and theater. Her work focuses on emotional and bodily memory and seeks to create a personal vocabulary that can function as a living and physical testament to identity and memory.
The Valeska Gert Visiting Professorship is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Institut für Theater- und Tanzwissenschaft of the Freie Universität Berlin and the Akademie der Künste.

Konzert und Gespräch / Concert and Talk

The Electronic Music Studio at TU Berlin presents a loudspeaker concert with two composers: Natasha Barrett, currently Edgard-Varèse-Guest-Professor at TU Berlin and Charo Calvo, 2017-18 composer in residence of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. In the presented works, both artists focus on the acousmatic experience, yet with different approaches. The TU Studio once again mobilizes
all its speakers to install an Ambisonics system on two levels in the Villa Elisabeth, thus creating a 3-dimensional sound space for live spatialization.
After the concert, Natasha Barrett and Charo Calvo will be in conversation with Henrik von Coler (TU Berlin).
This concert is a collaboration between the Electronic Music Studio, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program and the Master’s program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at UdK.

Today, after years of neglect, the crisis of modern values and global ecological disaster have given rise to a renewed interest in indigenous knowledge as a tool for both questioning Western thought and imagining a post-capitalistic future. The symposium takes Latin America as a point of departure for reflecting on global concerns such as the types of dialogues and relationships that are possible between different types of knowledge within the contemporary art world. By sharing their practices and work methodologies the speakers will deliberate over how to challenge pre-existing epistemic institutions and hierarchies and offer possible »entanglement models« for curatorial, artistic, and theoretical practice from which to avoid the trap of »abyssal thinking«.

Vortrag / Lecture

Felicity D. Scott, professor of Architecture at Columbia University and this year’s Rudolf Arnheim Guest Professor at Humboldt University, will present a lecture on Chilean artist Juan Downey’s electronic and cybernetic works. She reads their structurally ambivalent semantic and operational logics as harboring a political vocation in the wake of the military coup of September 11, 1973. Scott also shows how Downey’s works can be understood as allegories of a far-reaching media-technical and political apparatus then being forged in the United States, and as works modeling environmental systems as they operated as techniques of power.

Festival

Does something like queer literature exist—and what would it look like? And if authoritarian power seeks to marginalize “other” forms of life in society, then do art and literature have a special responsibility and task? Queer writing in central, eastern, and southeastern Europe is is the focus of the Queer*East-Festival hosted by the Literary Colloquium Berlin at the beginning of August. The opening talk will be held by Murathan Mungan, guest of the ABP
this year. He is not only one of the most prolific poets and authors of contemporary Turkish literature, but also one of the first to profess his homosexuality. His speech kicks off three days of discussions, readings, music, and performances this summer at Wannsee.

What contemporary music embodies with regard to the world religions and their social, cultural, and aesthetic concepts can be heard and interpreted in manifold and multi-dimensional ways. Since its founding in Berlin in 1963, the Artists-in-Berlin Program has used residencies in Berlin to create the framework for points of contact and interconnections between musical varieties, repeatedly transcending boundaries between cultures, genres, and classifications. The fifth edition of the mikromusik festival addresses notions of equality, diversity, and egalitarianism in societal structures and artistic experiences. It considers, for example, how an in-depth examination of indigenous social structures or the complex interrelationships of the ocean depths in the form of cultural or scientific knowledge can impact the creation of contemporary composition, instrument-making, ensemble
culture, performance settings, and listening. Current and former guests of the Artists-in-Berlin Program as well as protagonists from Berlin’s arts scene are invited to develop new projects and present them in an exhibition and in concerts at the daadgalerie and the TAK in Kreuzberg.

______________________
The unmediated power of raw, acoustic material, sonic interference, and the performative act characterize the work of award-winning American composer and sound artist Ashley Fure. Her search for the physical and kinetic origin of sound on the margins of instrumental possibilities pervades an imposing variety of works, ranging from electronically augmented solos to ensemble and orchestral works, to installations and musical theater formats.
Author Antonio Ortuño hails from Mexico. In 2010, Granta magazine named him one of the bright lights of a new generation of Spanish-language writers. Migration is the main theme of the author who grew up close to the railway line that thousands of migrants use each year to flee to the United States. Ortuño writes of the racism, disrespect for human dignity, oppression and cruel violence they experience on their journey in an immensely visceral way, with evil
sarcasm and great narrative power.
