Retrospective Enerday 2023 - 17th International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology

On May 05, 2023, the Chair of Energy Economics hosted the "ENERDAY - International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology" for the 17th time. After the conference had to be postponed to September last year due to the Corona pandemic, this year's ENERDAY returned to its "traditional" schedule at the beginning of May with the topic "The energy crisis as an accelerator of a sustainable transformation?".

The conference offered a broad spectrum of exciting scientific contributions to the 120 participants. Especially against the background of the current energy crisis, various questions regarding the transformation of the energy sector were addressed. The content ranged from analyses of the supply shortfalls of Russian natural gas on the European gas markets to flexibility potentials of sector coupling technologies to congestion management in low-voltage grids and the associated load control of end consumers.

The thematic focus as well as the scope of scientific contributions once again underlines the actuality of the ENERDAY conference format, which is reflected in the high participation, consisting of academia, but also industrial partners.

This year's keynote lectures provided a fitting framework for the ENERDAY. At the beginning, Dr. Axel Cunow, from SachsenEnergie, clarified the challenges that logal energy suppliers are confronted with when implementing the energy transition. To this regard, Dr. Cunow emphasized the necessity of grid expansion but also the control of decentralized flexible loads to solve grid bottlenecks. In a second keynote, Prof. Anne Neumann of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology addressed developments in the European and international gas markets. In addition, Prof. Neumann pointed to the competitiveness of green fuels for decarbonizing the transportation sector.

In addition to established scientists, Enerday also offers young scientists the opportunity to present their research. The organizers therefore award prizes for outstanding presentations and work by young scientists. This year, the Best Presentation Awards were once again introduced for an outstanding lecture with a high level of scientific knowledge and an appealing presentation of results. The prize has been awarded since 2015 and has been jointly sponsored by enerCONNECT e.V. and the Gesellschaft für Energiewirtschaft und Energiepolitik (GEE) since 2018.
