#OTD 125 years ago ... The First International Peace Conference took place in The Hague. The Tsar of Russia initiated it to discuss world disarmament. The Tsar hoped to spare his country the financial burden of having to match the arms expenditure of Germany and Austria. Unfortunately, the Conference didn't succeed in this respect. However, it did define and codify some of the rules of war in a series of Conventions. It also established an international court of arbitration. These achievements would have a big impact on how the two world wars were fought, but they wouldn't stop them. In June, the conference participants arrived in Haarlem. #25yff #geschichte #historiker #archive #forschung #history #archives #research

#OTD 125 years ago ...The Hamburg Newspaper announced doubts that the #InternationalWorkersDay would last for 10 more years. It "will gently and gloriously fall asleep". In 1886, the American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor called for a general strike on May 1. The response was overwhelming: more than 300,000 workers participated on this "Moving Day". May 1 was not chosen at random: Old contracts expired on that day. The aim of the industrial action was to secure a fixed eight-hour working day in the new contracts, down from the usual twelve hours. Many people participated in the general strike, especially in Chicago, where many German immigrants were active. The strike was bitterly fought and cost several lives. https://lnkd.in/eYjt5Tfr Nevertheless, the American unions planned to continue the strike on May 1 in support of their demands. They received support from the Paris Socialist Congress in July 1889, which decided to declare May Day an international day of struggle for the eight-hour day. In Germany, social democrats and trade unionists were initially divided over the proclamation of May Day as a day of struggle and a public holiday. Despite fears of provoking employers too much, some unions supported May Day even though it was not an official holiday. Those who did not go to work on May 1 went on strike. The Social Democratic parliamentary group in the Reichstag recommended that May Day be celebrated only in places where conflicts were not expected. As a result, on May 1, 1890, nearly 100,000 workers across the country went on "May Day Walks." However, there were still conflicts; some employers locked out the strikers.
