Nature's Brilliant Colours
Newsletter No. 24 10/2015
Welcome to Autumn
Here we are, in the midst of autumn and already preparing for our holiday shopping season.
In this newsletter, we would like to present a diamond variation: rose cut “icy” diamonds.
Behind Icy Diamonds
The term “icy diamond”, also called a raw or rustic diamond, refers to stones that are crisscrossed with so many different coloured inclusions that they appear opaque (from the Latin word opacus = shaded). With this structure, the typical brilliance* of an inclusion-free diamond is altered, giving icy diamonds a more discreet appearance than their sparkling relatives. This is also the reason why they are much less expensive.
* Reminder: a diamond’s brilliance is composed of lustre (outer brilliance), total internal reflexion (internal brilliance), and the index of refraction.

In the case of icy diamonds, only the surface lustre is crucial. A good polishing, combined with colour and cut, bring out the charm of these stones.
The Rose Cut – Find Out More
In most cases, icy diamonds are typically rose cut. This is a historical diamond cut which can occur in various forms, including, for example, round, heart, or pear-shaped. Rose cut diamonds are flat at the bottom with a dome shaped crown. A round rose-cut diamond resembles a rose-bud about to open - hence its name.
The pairs of stones we are presenting here are particularly well suited to earrings or cuff links since, as the stones are flat, they are relatively light despite their size.
These pairs are each cut together from the same rough stone and then separated exactly down the middle with a laser. By using this process, we obtain pairs that fit perfectly with each other.
