Issue July 2021
This is the first issue of our Wiwi newsletter. From now on, we want to report the latest information on personnel, research and research projects, events, etc. on a regular basis.

Dr. Janis Neufeld honored with EURO Award for the Best EJOR Paper

Janis Neufeld from the Chair of Business Administration, especially Industrial Management, received a very great honour at this year's "European Conference on Operational Research" in Athens. Together with Liji Shen and Stéphane Dauzère-Pérèz, the paper "Solving the Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem with Sequence-Dependent Setup Times" was awarded the "EURO Award for the Best EJOR Paper" in the category "Theory and Methodology".The selection was based on 1342 papers published in the Operations Research Flagship Journal "European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR)" in 2018 and 2019.

Outstanding publication success for Dr. David Schönheit

Dr. David Schönheit (Chair of Business Administration, esp. Energy Economics) and his co-authors are pleased about an outstanding publication success. The paper "Toward a fundamental understanding of flow-based market coupling for cross-border electricity trading" is part of David Schönheit's recently completed dissertation and was submitted to the journal Applied Energy. The journal is one of the TOP 5 journals in the energy field. Due to the high relevance and quality of the topic, the publication was selected as outstanding in the review process and "upgraded" to the even higher quality journal Advances in Applied Energy. The content of the paper is about understanding flow-based market coupling and which influencing factors affect electricity trading. In addition, the authors provide an open-source model for this purpose.
 
Welcome, Professor Blagoev!

           
Since June 2021 Professor Blagoy Blagoev has been working at the faculty and is the holder of the newly established Chair for Business Administration, especially Organization. The chair was established in addition to the already existing chair of Professor Schirmer and thus strengthens the management area at the faculty.

Distinguished Research Fellows 2021

           
Julia Kotlarsky (Auckland Business School), Piyush Sharma (Curtin University Perth), Ramteen Sioshansi (Ohio State University) und Michalis Drouvelis (University of Birmingham) are the Distinguished Research Fellows 2021.

The renowned researchers will visit the faculty for longer research stay in the course of the coming year. In June and July, they gave first insights into their research interests and are now looking forward to get in touch with interested researchers from the faculty.

Research Projects

           
Project start: ONEforest (Horizon 2020)

Together with 18 project partners from eight countries, the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Industrial Management started to work on the EU project ONEforest in June. The project aims to develop a multi-criteria decision support system that will enable different stakeholders in forestry to make long-term strategic decisions according to individual objectives. Forest owners will be able to assess which way of forest management is advantageous under current and future ecological and economic conditions.

German Research Foundation (DFG) funds project on algorithmic control of workers

The DFG funds the research project "Algorithmic Control: A Legitimacy Perspective on Worker-level Implications" (AlgoWork), initially for a two-year period. Project start will be in fall 2021. The project will be conducted in close collaboration between the Chair of Business Informatics, esp. Business Engineering at TU Dresden (Prof. Martin Wiener) and the Endowed Chair for Information Systems & E-Services at TU Darmstadt (Prof. Alexander Benlian).

Project success within the measure "Disruption and Societal Change" (TUDiSC)

Together with Dr. Solvejg Nitzke (Chair of Media Studies and Modern German Literature) and Professor Jens Krzywinski (Chair of Industrial Design Engineering), Dr. Martina Pieperhoff (Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation) received a funding commitment for the project "Disrupt!Research. Dynamic Collaboration under Conditions of Disruption". The project is part of the TUDiSC program which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Free State of Saxony as part of the federal and state excellence strategy.

German-Canadian analysis of risk reporting during the financial crisis published

In the article "Risk Reporting in Financial Crises: A Tale of Two Countries" published in the International Journal of Accounting & Information, Professor Michael Dobler and colleagues from the University of Ottawa examine risk reporting in annual reports of German and Canadian industrial companies during the financial crisis. Over the analysis period 2006 to 2010, the study shows that risk-oriented reporting in both countries has expanded in scope, but has hardly changed in terms of content.

 
           
New open access book: How the energy transition in Europe can succeed

This open access book analyzes the transition toward a low-carbon energy system in Europe under the aspects of flexibility and technological progress. It summarizes the results and recommendations of the REFLEX project which was embedded in the EU Horizon 2020 Work Program “Secure, clean and efficient energy” and addressed the topic LCE-21-2015 “Modelling and analysing the energy system, its transformation and impacts” during the project duration from May 2016 until April 2019.

Does green investment work against climate change?

In order to achieve the ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions, the financial sector is also looking for solutions. But does green financing really have the effects on combating climate change that the financial sector and investors hope it will? The Advisory Board to the Federal Ministry of Finance, chaired by Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum (Chair of Economics, esp. Public Economics), has addressed this question in a recent report.

Professor Hilbert Prize 2021

Until October 31, 2021 applications for the Professor Hilbert Prize 2021 may be submitted. The aim of the award is to support research projects of PhDs and postdoc candidates of the Faculty of Business and Economics in the areas of empirical data analysis, business analytics, business intelligence or related fields.

Good teaching pays off: Teaching Award of the Society of Friends and Sponsors of Technische Universität Dresden

The committed efforts of lecturers at TUD in education and further education in the academic year 2020/2021 are to be honored with the teaching award of the Society of Friends and Sponsors of Technische Universität Dresden. The prizes can be awarded to individuals or groups. Nominations are very welcome.

HORIZON EUROPE Work Program 2021/22

Since mid-June the work program for 2021 and 2022 is published across all funding lines. It addresses objectives and thematic areas for which a total of 14.7 billion euros will be made available. By this, attractive funding opportunities for TU Dresden's researchers are provided, especially with regard to topics that will help accelerate the green and digital transitions and will contribute to sustainable recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and to EU resilience against future crises.

Transcampus Program: Call for Projects

With an annual call for proposals, the TU Dresden supports projects that strengthen the partnership with King's College London and aim at joint workshops, publications, third-party funding applications or the exchange of junior researchers. Applications can be submitted until September 9, 2021.

One successfully acquired Transcampus project already exists at the faculty. The Chair of Business Education and Management Training started to work on the research project "Wellbeing and Resilience Competency Development" in spring this year.

Projects with other international partners can be supported through other funding programs of TU Dresden.
