Dear alumni,

We are looking forward to the upcoming months together with our students, researchers, teaching staff and of course with you: our alumni. In this newsletter you will find news from your alma mater and events for which it is worth visiting Göttingen.

Make a note of the weekend of July 9, we cordially invite you to the 5th Night of Knowledge and the Göttingen Alumni-Day. At the “Nacht des Wissens”, the entire Göttingen world of science presents itself and offers a huge range of different experiments, guided tours, lectures, science slams and much more. We take advantage of this unique event and combine the Night of Knowledge with the Göttingen Alumni-Day. Spend a summery weekend in Göttingen and stroll around the Campus with other alumni.

Feel free to forward this email to former fellow students and help us expand our network. Interested alumni can register for future University newsletters here.

Do you have feedback for us? Feel free to contact the Alumni Relations Team at any time at alumni@uni-goettingen.de.

Enjoy reading and best regards from Göttingen

Prof. Dr. Metin Tolan
President of the University of Göttingen

Katharina Kastendieck
Head of Alumni & Development

P.S.: While we were preparing this newsletter for you, events have been unfolding. We are utterly appalled by the war in Ukraine, a sovereign state in Europe. Read the University's statement here. Of course, there are staff and students with Ukrainian citizenship at the University of Göttingen. Our special sympathy and unreserved solidarity goes out to them. The Georgia Augusta International Association, of which the University is a member, is appealing for donations to support students in need on site and to make it possible for students and scientists from Ukraine who are in danger to be accepted here in Göttingen.

Fawn rescue and wood trade
Trudging through the Göttingen Stadtwald on the weekend – that is a great pleasure for most people. But what else do we actually know about the forest, apart from knowing the way to the Kehr almost by heart? In their blog "Forst erklärt" (Forestry Explained), forestry students Jan Hüsing from the HAWK, Felix Sahlmann from the University of Göttingen and his former fellow student Simon Delkeskamp close this knowledge gap. Vividly and with lots of photos, they explain what is going on in the forest and how it relates to our lives - from strategies for hibernation to animal tracks in the forest and the protection of young plants.

Opening of the Forum Wissen
How is knowledge created? Which people and things are involved? Is there a method to knowledge creation? We would like to discuss these and other questions in the future Göttingen knowledge museum "Forum Wissen", primarily using objects from our academic collections. Starting in early summer 2022, the Forum Wissen will be open and provide insights into ongoing research and teaching. You can already take a look behind the scenes of the emerging museum - in the video on the Forum Wissen blog.

Insulation using popcorn?
Building insulation has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. Good exterior insulation reduces heating costs, which means lower CO2 emissions. Nowadays, sustainable natural insulation materials are already available for the interiors of buildings. A research group at the University of Göttingen has long been researching manufacturing processes for products made of popcorn that are sustainable and efficient. In 2021 the University has agreed upon a licence for the commercial use of the process and the products for building insulation.

New Year - New Executive Board
"The path at the University of Göttingen does not end with graduation," says the new chairwoman of Alumni Göttingen e.V. For the first time, members filled this office through an election. Long-time, dedicated member Dinah Stollwerck-Bauer, alumna of law, was elected as chairwoman of the Association. We warmly congratulate her and the entire board on their election! We are especially pleased that Marie Rieske, a young candidate and master's student, will serve as an assessor on the new board. In addition, general meetings - including board elections - of several chapters have been held.

Perspectives: The Alumni Donation Project for Forum Wissen
As alumni of the University of Göttingen, we represent diverse knowledge and thus different perspectives on things. That is why we would like to sponsor the exhibition space "Heads, Views, Perspectives". You too can be a part of it! In the virtual exhibition space, you can playfully link your donation to an exhibit. Donors who donate 100 Euros or more will be immortalized in the museum chronicle, which will be displayed in the entrance of the building!
