Alumni magazine „Kontakt-online“

In November 2012, TUD began receiving funding as a University of Excellence – a milestone in the university's history. TUD has since become increasingly interdisciplinary and international. The scope of this magazine issue ranges from the Clusters of Excellence and the DRESDEN-concept research alliance to the high-caliber emerging fields. Plus: TU Dresden has been a member of Santander Universities for many years. This means that alumni can also take advantage of scholarships for continuing education – two of which are presented here. One particular highlight: scholarships for a five-day stay in Valencia, Spain.

10 years of Excellence: TU Dresden on course to become a world-leading university

November 2012 marks a milestone in TU Dresden's history: Ten years ago this month, the university began receiving funding as one of the eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. This Excellence status has initiated a dynamic change process at TUD. The university has become even more interdisciplinary and international, attracting outstanding researchers from all over the world. Consequently, TU Dresden can consolidate its place among the best German universities and draw closer to world-class status. “Excellence is not only the driving force for exceptional research into unknown scientific territory – it is the overall catalyst for innovation,” says Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger, “It shapes our whole university and the world beyond in many different ways.”

Shaping the future, atom by atom

Quantum physics is complex and abstract. What do a topological coffee table, a cookie jar analogy, hairy donuts and a half-dead cat have to do with it? They give insight into the fundamental research on this technology.
