At the end of the winter semester in person and with a successfully implemented energy-saving plan, we are looking forward to the upcoming spring and summer months in Göttingen. For the buildings of the University of Göttingen that are connected to the university's own district heating network, we were able to achieve a 15.5% reduction in consumption in 2022 in comparison to the previous year. In addition to news and research updates from the university and campus, we also have a few events prepared for you that are worth a visit to your university city.
For example, if you know young people who are in the career orientation phase, why not visit our Career Information Days together on 13 and 14 March, show them around your alma mater and share your experiences with the next generation of students.
Furthermore, I am very pleased about the Alumni Sustainability Initiative that has been launched. The expertise and experiences of our alumni are invaluable in helping our university move towards a more sustainable energy supply. I invite you to help us in this important endeavour and to contribute your ideas and suggestions. Together we can shape a sustainable future.
Feel free to forward this newsletter to former fellow students and help us expand our network. Interested alumni can register for future University newsletters here.

"In Göttingen I became human again".
On the 70th anniversary of his enrolment, Dr Leon Weintraub, survivor of the Holocaust and the Auschwitz concentration camp, returned to his alma mater for a surviving witness talk. The 96-year-old studied medicine in Göttingen directly after the war and had expressed the strong wish to be able to give a lecture in his university town about continuing life with and after Auschwitz and thus also reach many young people. The conversation was recorded.
Professor Stefan Hell receives Medal of Honour "In Publica Commoda"
The physicist Professor Stefan Hell has been awarded the "In Publica Commoda" (for the good of all) medal of honour by the University of Göttingen. This award recognises his services to basic research in Göttingen, as well as his work in developing the Göttingen Campus. Hell is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Göttingen and honorary Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Göttingen.
Why are there more plant species in some places than in others? Why is diversity highest in the tropics? What is the connection between biodiversity and environmental conditions? To help answer these questions, an international team led by researchers at the University of Göttingen has reconstructed the distribution of plant diversity around the world and made high-resolution predictions of where and how many plant species there are. This will support conservation efforts, help to protect plant diversity and assess changes in the light of the ongoing biodiversity and climate crises.
Alumni initiative for sustainable energy solutions at the university
To mobilise the expertise and commitment of alumni to support the University in planning and implementing sustainable energy supply solutions: This is the goal of the Sustainability Initiative, which was launched by alumnus Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lücke at the last general meeting of Alumni Göttingen.

Measuring 17 metres in length and weighing 1.2 tonnes, the largest exhibit is currently moving into Forum Wissen bone by bone: the skeleton of a sperm whale from the former Zoological Museum, which has found its home in the Göttingen Knowledge Museum after extensive restoration. The whale's arrival is accompanied by a painting competition and a fundraising campaign. The "Göttingen Whale Home" campaign culminates in a whale action day on 19 March.
