DFG funds new Research Training Group on metamaterials

Starting this October, more than 20 young researchers will develop digital methods for the discovery and exploration of new materials. They will be guided by an interdisciplinary team of experts from the fields of mechanics, materials science, mathematics, physics and computer science from TU Dresden, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and TU Chemnitz. The spokesperson of D³ is Markus Kästner, Professor of Computational and Experimental Solid Mechanics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Collaborative Research Center to optimize production processes will be extended

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has extended the funding of the Collaborative Research Center “Method development for the mechanical joinability in adaptable processes”. The CRC/Transregio 285 will receive approx. 11 million euros for the second four-year funding period. Since 2019, researchers from TU Dresden, the University of Paderborn and Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg have been collaborating in the interdisciplinary CRC in the field of production engineering.

Matthias Wählisch holds Chair of Distributed Systems

Prof. Matthias Wählisch has held the Chair for Distributed Systems at the Faculty of Computer Science since May. Matthias Wählisch researches and teaches about distributed systems that are connected via wireless or wired networks. Scalable, reliable, and secure Internet communication is particularly important to him, since the Internet is the largest distributed and networked system that is currently in use.

Thomas Kühne holds Chair of Computational Systems Science

Since May, Prof. Thomas Kühne has held the Chair of Computational Systems Science at the Faculty of Computer Science and will mainly work at CASUS Görlitz. His research focuses on the development of new numerical methods and algorithms for chemical and physical processes and their implementation in the form of computer programmes.

Internationalization Committee: Your contact for topics related to international affairs

The internationalization committee of the School of Engineering Sciences bundles cross-faculty international activities such as partnership work with selected target regions (currently in focus: India and cross-border cooperation with Poland and the Czech Republic). Composed of the representatives appointed by the Faculty Board, Prof. Ercan Altinsoy (EuI), Prof. Clemens Felsmann (MW) and Prof. Christof Fetzer (INF), as well as the International Affairs Advisor, Maike Heitkamp-Mai, the committee sees itself as an interface to the faculties, other schools and central university units. It brings topics to the Faculty Board, School Council and International Affairs Commission. If you have any questions or ideas and suggestions, please contact Maike Heitkamp-Mai.

Cooperation between TUD and Czech cluster WASTen intensified

In order to consolidate the close cooperation between TUD and the Czech cluster WASTen, a second joint workshop, topic of "Ways to Circular Economy", took place at the Czech Technical University of Prague (CTU) on 3 and 4 May. Under the scientific lead of Prof. Michael Beckmann, Chairman for the School of Engineering Sciences at TUD, and Dr. Radek Hořenovský, Managing Director of WASTen, around 40 representatives from science and industry from both countries met to expand the cross-border networks and discuss current topics in the circular economy.

India is focus country of the School of Engineering Sciences

Embedded in the strategic partnership work of the International Office and in close cooperation with the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the next activities are a delegation visit of TUD in November 2023, a Winter School at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi also in November and a Summer School on Sustainability initiated by the Heritage Network at IIT Roorkee in 2024.

Team Digital Teaching: New Website

Since the beginning of the year, the Digital Teaching team of the ING school is complete. It now presents itself and its activities on the newly designed website. The team members support teachers in the further development of their teaching in presence, online and hybrid. Among other things, the Digital Teaching Team develops face-to-face and online teaching/learning arrangements, offers (media) didactic advice, recommends digital teaching/learning tools and, if required, provides adequate contact persons.

Save the Date: July 19-21, 2023 - Focus Conference Lessons Learned

For the fifth time, the focus conference Lessons Learned will take place in July. All teachers and those who are interested in teaching from all units of TUD as well as from other universities and colleges are cordially invited to participate in the event. This is an opportunity to network across the boundaries of the own subject area and to learn from each other.

BASF-TUD Matching Day

In mid-May, more than 15 professors, many scientific employees of the TUD and BASF employees met at the Schwarzheide site. Together, they discussed current research projects, joint collaborations and the skills needed by future graduates. In their greetings, Jürgen Fuchs, Managing Director of BASF Schwarzheide GmbH, Prof. Ronald Tetzlaff, CTIO of TUD, and Prof. Michael Beckmann, Chairman of the School of Engineering Sciences, emphasized the importance of jointly shaping the necessary change for a climate-friendly future. Energy Research IDEA STUDIO

On the initiative of the Vice-Rector Research, an IDEAS STUDIO on the topic of energy research took place on May 16, 2023. The focus was on an intensive exchange between the participants on current research as well as future research and cooperation fields in the field of energy research. At the topic tables – Energy Research as the Basis for a Potential Area at TUD, Sustainability Management, Security of Supply, Hydrogen Research and Energy Research in the Area of Conflict between Transfer/Politics/Society – ideas for joint projects as well as for national and international cooperation were discussed.

Workshop Future Robotics Lab

At the 2nd workshop of the Future Robotics Lab, the participants, led by Prof. Uwe Aßmann, identified different technology fields for research: cobotics, swarm robotics, green robotics and microrobotics. Each topic is supervised by a working group, which will work out concrete activities and projects in the coming meetings. Anyone interested in participating in any of the above areas is welcome to contact Dr. Anja Blüher. The next workshop will take place on August 18.

Call for tenders

Green ICT Award: In order to get prospective scientists interested in microelectronics and especially in Green ICT, a study prize - the Green ICT Award - is awarded within the framework of the "Green ICT @ FMD" competence center with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The aim is to reward outstanding student theses in the field of resource-saving information and communication technology and to motivate young researchers. Submission deadline June 30, 2023
Carl Pirath Award: The German Association of Transport Sciences (Deutsche Verkehrswissenschaftliche Gesellschaft e.V.) announces the Carl Pirath Award 2023 for the promotion of young researchers. This prize is awarded for outstanding dissertations in engineering or economics in the overall field of mobility and transport. Submission deadline June 30, 2023
TUD in Dialog - The excellence measure "TUD in Dialog" supports projects that are intended to strengthen the exchange between the university and society. Formats for innovative, contemporary science communication that are appropriate for the target group are in demand; both analog and digital implementation is possible. Apply for funding by June 30.
Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize: The DFG awards the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize to provide scientists and scholars at an early stage of their careers with recognition and further incentive for their outstanding scientific work.
Submission deadline in the Rector's Office until July 5, 2023 to Mandy Dziubanek, Office of the Rector/Board Support.
German Multimedia Award mb21: The German Multimedia Award mb21, a creative competition for digital, net-based and interactive projects, offers again this year the opportunity to submit multimedia works and projects of young students up to 25 year. Submission deadline August 7, 2023
TUD Equality and Diversity Incentive Fund: As an inclusive university, it is natural for TU Dresden to recognize and promote diversity. In 2024, projects and measures can again be funded under the Equality and Diversity Incentive Fund. Please send the application form by e-mail to Diversity Management by September 15, 2023.

Synthetic Fuels: A Promise for Future Mobility? Introducing Markus Schubert

Synthetic fuels, especially e-fuels, could be a viable alternative to fossil fuels and help protect our planet. But what is actually involved in their production? Prof. Markus Schubert has been the Chair of Chemical Process Engineering at TU Dresden since 2022 and is researching how synthetic fuels can become more sustainable and efficient. The video provides an insight into his research.

Progress through digitalisation | #BrightMinds: Wolfgang E. Nagel

Today, science relies on extensive research data. This requires powerful information infrastructures with high security and stability. Prof. Wolfgang E. Nagel, Director of the Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH), and his team ensure that research at TU Dresden can be conducted reliably. He is one of the eight passionate scientists featured in the film "Bright Minds. Excellent Research." which provides insights into cutting-edge research at TU Dresden. In the video he explains how he supports scientists at TUD.
