ERC Consolidator Grant for
Prof Sebastian Reineke

Prof. Sebastian Reineke, Chair of Organic Semiconductors, has received a Consolidator Grant of 2 million euros from the European Research Council (ERC) for his research project SLOWTONICS. The aim of the project is to initiate a paradigm shift in modern technology by developing and implementing biocompatible devices. The project is scheduled to start in January 2024.

The Alumni of the Month: Physicist Dr. Boubakar Barry

Even after more than 30 years since receiving his doctorate, Dr. Boubakar Barry still feels a strong connection to TUD. He still benefits from his close ties to his alma mater and serves as a networker and TUD regional ambassador. He currently holds the position of executive director at the West and Central African Research and Education Network WACREN.

Michael Ruck receives Wilhelm Klemm Prize

Prof. Dr. Michael Ruck of the TU Dresden will be awarded the Wilhelm Klemm Prize of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) on September 6. The award ceremony will take place at the GDCh Science Forum Chemistry 2023 in Leipzig. The prize recognizes Prof. Rucks' outstanding contributions to solid-state chemistry, especially in the field of compounds with bismuth and phosphorus.

International Affairs Advisor
Dr. Magdalena Scheerbaum

As of June 1, Dr. Magdalena Scheerbaum has started her work as the new International Affairs Advisor for the School of Science. Her core task will be to revise and optimize the School's internationalization strategy. In addition, she will provide support to the all school members by taking over the equivalence examinations, revising the website section "International Affairs" or organizing the Mobility Party. Dr. Scheerbaum has been working in the area of internationalization at TU Dresden since 2012 and has held various positions in the International Office. Previously, she completed her doctorate in the field of international relations at the Chair of Contemporary History at TU Dresden.

Nuclear Safety Research: Joint Project FENABIUM II Investigates Interactions of Radioactive Substances with Biological Systems

In the joint project FENABIUM II, researchers from Technische Universität Dresden, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Leipzig University are investigating the interactions of the so-called f-elements with biomolecules. The research consortium, led by Jan. J. Weigand, Professor of Inorganic Molecular Chemistry at Technische Universität Dresden, aims to gain a better understanding of the fundamental processes responsible for the transport and accumulation of radiotoxic elements in the geo- and biosphere, in particular the food chain. In this way, the team wants to derive basic principles for models of a possible spread of these elements in the environment, but also to develop approaches for decontamination.The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the joint project with a total of almost 2.9 million euros. The funded research activities make a substantial contribution to strengthening scientific-technical competence and promoting young scientists in the field of nuclear waste management in Germany. FENABIUM II is an example of the successful cooperation between Dresden's research institutions within the framework of the DRESDEN-concept e.V. science alliance.

#BrightMinds: Catherina G. Becker

Developing new treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer's, leukemia and diabetes - that is the goal of the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD). 250 scientists from 30 countries are researching the biology of stem cells and tissues in order to understand the regeneration processes of organs. Catherina G. Becker is Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the CRTD and, together with her research group, is investigating how zebrafish can repair the central nervous system after spinal cord injury.

GAMM Art Exhibition Combined Art, Science and Technology

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM), a scientific art exhibition took place in the lecture hall centre of the TU Dresdenn from 30 May to 2 June 2023. For the exhibition, seminar room 304 was transformed into a gallery, which was open not only to the more than 1000 participants of the GAMM conference, but also to the public.The artists Wolfram Neumann and Denis Walther presented their interpretation of the interplay between applied mathematics and mechanics. Objects and installations by Prof. Daniel Lordick, Dr. Marco Salvalaglio and Prof. Axel Voigt were also on display. The exhibition also included historical collection items, mathematical models, gear models and calculating machines.  At the midissage Prof. Axel Voigt, who curated the exhibition, guided the more than 100 visitors through the exhibition and also showed the premiere of the project "Airport" by Anton Ginzburg, who worked at TU Dresden in 2021 as part of the Schauffler Lab scholarship. The visual artwork, created together with Prof. Stefan Gumhold and Prof. Axel Voigt, is an immersive, programmed environment choreographed by aeroplane traffic and is a further development of the Formstein programme by Karl-Heinz Adler and Friedrich Kracht.

Australian Scientist Dr Brett Kagan on Synthetic Biological Intelligence

On 25 April 2023, Dr Brett Kagan from Cortical Labs, Australia, presented his groundbreaking research that involved brain cells grown in a dish playing the computer game pong. His work aims to revolutionize computing by integrating living neurons into chips, leading to potential applications in drug screening, understanding brain activity and developing neuromorphic computers. The public lecture at TU Dresden highlighted the development and application of synthetic biological intelligence and was very well attended. Catalysis for the world with Nobel Prize winner Benjamin List

On 3 May 2023, Nobel Prize winner Benjamin List from the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr gave a very inspiring public lecture on catalysis and how this technology might be the key for solving some of the greatest challenges of our time: climate change, energy transition, feeding the world's population or circular economy. However, Ben List not only enchanted the Dresden public with his fascination for catalysis and chemistry in general, but also with his open mind and down to earth manner.
