“The convolution of the world: a liberal way out of climate crisis and growth dilemma.” Lecture by climate impact researcher Prof. Anders Levermann

On June 28 at 1 pm, physicist and climate impact researcher Anders Levermann will give a lecture on climate change. He will explore the dilemma of limitations and dynamics with regard to the climate crisis and growth. Using practical examples, he will outline the mathematical principle of convolution, which enables infinite development in a finite world by promoting the expansion into the realm of diversity. The public lecture will take place in the afternoon of the festive event “20 years of EMAS environmental management at TU Dresden”.

Proponents of the Sustainable Development Goals introduce themselves

Agenda 2030 presents the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which constitute a “roadmap” for the future. Various stakeholders at TUD are also directly committed to these SDGs through their projects and involvement. During the summer semester, each week we will present individuals who are dedicated to one of the goals. The SDG campaign will be featured on both the Green Office and TUD Instagram channels. Every fortnight, we will also present a project from the field of education for sustainable development on the Green Office channel – for pupils, for students, for our staff.

“PLASTIC. And then!” exhibition moves on

What percentage of plastics produced in Germany are recycled each year? How much plastic packaging does a person in Germany use? And why do we actually separate our waste? The “PLASTIC. And then!” exhibition provides answers to these questions and an idea for reusing the material, such as for convertible construction elements for seating furniture. The exhibition is open until July 4 at the HTW Dresden in the seminar building, 2nd floor, Friedrich-List-Platz 1.

Claiming Campus: Chair-ish the campus by building chairs

Get involved and help us to (quite literally) shape the campus on June 20 and 21. Working closely with designer Jonathan Radetz, stools for meetings and social spaces will be built in front of the “Alte Mensa” canteen to show how much we “chair-ish” the campus in a number of different ways. With the workshops and discussions resulting from this project, the TUD international campus continues to be shaped through the implementation of all of our ideas.

A Sea Symphony: Concert of the University Choir Dresden and the Choir of the Mozarteum University Salzburg.

Sometimes stormy, sometimes calm – the sea has been a source of musical inspiration for centuries. This fascination with the sea has been adopted by TUD’s University Choir for its concert, “A Sea Symphony.” Christiane Büttig will conduct the event in the Kreuzkirche church in Dresden on July 2 at 5:00 pm. At the concert, the University Choir, soloists and choir of the Mozarteum University Salzburg will perform alongside the members of the Saxon State Orchestra. In the beginning of July, the TUD's University Orchestra will perform two powerful summer concerts at Lukaskirche Dresden. On July 1 at 7:30 pm, the symphony No. 4 in E-flat major by Anton Bruckner, which was a great success at its premiere and is still one of the most popular symphonic orchestral works, will be performed under the title "The Romantic". The Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein's popular musical will be the highlight of the second summer concert.

Exhibition on Art and Teaching at TU Dresden in the 1990s

How do freelance lecturers and university members remember the transformation period at TUD 30 years after the Peaceful Revolution, and what are the artistic works created in the 1990s about? With around 40 positions, the group exhibition brings together an extraordinarily broad spectrum of artistic techniques and forms of expression, from figure and freehand drawing, to textile design, ceramics, environmental design, modeling, sculpture, photography, puppetry and animated film. The artistic works of the teachers are a reflection of the changing pedagogical concepts while also standing for subjective expression and reflection. You can visit the exhibition in the Gallery of the Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections in the Görges-Building until July 7

Headaches and migraines – support for staff and students

One in three adults in Germany are affected by headaches – that’s around 54 million people. Every day, 900,000 people suffer from migraine attacks, and 100,000 people are unable to leave their beds as a result.
But headaches and migraines can be effectively managed and even avoided altogether by taking preventive measures. For this reason, TUD provides its members with free access to support, such as the “Prevent Headache” app.

Noise makes us sick!

Noise-induced hearing loss is currently the second most common occupational illness, surpassed only by infectious diseases due to the pandemic. For TUD employees whose work involves exposure to daily noise levels above 80 dB(A) or peak levels above 135 dB(C), regular occupational health screenings with hearing tests are important to complement wearing suitable hearing protection. You can register for an appointment via Occupational Health Services.

Bringing research to the stage: stories of migration

A staged production on stories of migration to eastern Germany will take place in Dresden on July 6 and 7. Nine amateur actors will share their own experiences and the experiences of other immigrants or People of Color in Saxony. The piece is a product of the citizen science project “Migration in East Germany: Your story told in your own words” (MigOst), a collection of narratives about living in three eastern German cities during the time in which Germany was divided, in the time directly after the Fall of the Berlin wall, and the present, all told from a migrant perspective and hosted by TUD’s Center for Integration Studies. Thanks to cooperation with the Staatsschauspiel State Playhouse of Dresden and the support of “TUD in Dialogue,” these stories will receive the limelight they deserve.

Erzgebirge Atlas – the tour through the Ore Mountains continues

In May, the Faculty of Architecture’s Institute of Urbanism and Urban Studies launched its tour of the Erzgebirge – the Ore Mountains region of Saxony and Bohemia – with the support of the EXU measure “TUD in Dialogue”. Multiple stations were opened to encourage dialogue with people from the region. What makes the Ore Mountains so livable and unique? What topics are particularly important? The next dates are:
  • until June 22: exhibition in Johanngeorgenstadt Town Hall
  • June 24: 750th anniversary in Gelenau
  • July 15: “Trubel in der Poche” festival in Schneeberg
  • from July 17 to mid-August: exhibition at the Annaberg Technology-Oriented Foundation and Service Center (Annaberg GDZ)

Engaging with society eye-to-eye requires innovative, targeted and contemporary methods of science communication. These can take the form of public panel discussions, exhibitions, contests and citizen science projects, but also online platforms such as blogs, forums and social media accounts. Anyone looking to carry out such a project – or a similar type of project – in 2024 can apply for a “TUD in Dialogue” grant until June 30.

Contact person in cases of harassment, discrimination, violence

» Further information
If you were to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Ambitious, responsible, thoughtful.

What are your responsibilities at TU Dresden?
My main job is to strengthen anti-discrimination measures and attitudes at TU Dresden. To this end, I am the contact for the Complaints Office for Incidents of Harassment, Discrimination and Violence (BDG). Students and staff who have experienced these incidents, either as victims, witnesses, perpetrators, or who are simply interested in learning more about these issues, can contact me. We then work together to find ways of handling the situation as best suits their needs. As a member of the Compliance Management team, I am responsible for complaints management. With a view to entrenching protection against discrimination and preventative measures within institutional structures, I regularly offer awareness-raising and empowerment events, develop publicity projects and am active in various committees and (inter)regional networks.

What do you enjoy most about your daily work?
Above all, I find my colleagues in Directorate University Culture to be very inquisitive, open and supportive. We talk to each other on an equal footing and there is a truly tangible willingness to learn together. This is extremely important, because recognizing and preventing harassment, discrimination and violence in the long term at all university levels is very challenging, albeit immensely rewarding.

How would you define “university culture?”
For me, university culture is a fascinating mélange of the premises and principles of social interaction, science and administration. For this reason, it is framed by ideas, values and freedoms, but also by bureaucracy and rules. This juxtaposition can and should be conveyed in many different ways, and at the same time it is experienced by each person individually in our shared community.

Where do you see the greatest need for a cultural change at TU Dresden and who would be responsible for this change in your opinion?
In my view, cultural change should result in a non-discriminatory and agile university. It isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s a process that requires more (self-)criticism, cooperation and patience. As individuals at TUD, we can definitely work on manifold things, such as a culture of collective responsibility and solidarity that not only extends to marginalized groups but actively embraces them. However, in the end, the prototypical academic and administrative system of a university is designed for competition, rivalry and hierarchies to such an extent that hardly any real space or resources remain for prospects of long-term solidarity. Preventing discrimination and perpetuated power imbalances requires acknowledging them and making the necessary changes across society as a whole
