AMBS Summer School combines art, science and building

From 10 to 22 July 2023, the international summer school "Architectural Math for Bamboo Structures" (AMBS) will take place at TU Dresden under the direction of Prof. Daniel Lordick. The 20 participants, including young scientists and artists from all over the world, will first learn mathematical basics and digital design methods and then apply them practically: Under the guidance of experts in building with bamboo, the participants will realise an examplary design of a bamboo sculpture called "La Fleur Mathématique".  The sculpture will be prefabricated in the workshop and finally transported in segments to Pillnitz. There it will be set up in the palace park and inaugurated on 21 July for the opening of the Design Campus. Until October 2023, it will be open to the public and visitors to the palace and park.

TU Dresden is the university with the most patents in Germany

The Dresden University of Technology is Germany's university with the most patents. This is the result of a comparative study by the "Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft" (IW) in Cologne. The Dresden university "emerged as the clear winner from the comparison", according to the paper "Wie patent sind die deutschen Hochschulen?" ("How patent are German universities?"). The particular research strength of TUD lies above all in the technical and natural sciences, for example in the areas of microelectronics, energy technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and medicine.

BIOS Reports

BioS Reports is a journal run by students of the Masters "Biology in Society", which presents scientific texts produced in the program's modules in a clear and generally understandable way, and is published monthly. In addition to their own research showing what influence different animals can have on the economy, the journal also examines widespread assumptions for their scientific correctness and provides insights into student research projects or student jobs. It's worth a look! The journal even has its own ISSN: 2940-4673.

Monique Meier is Professor for Didactics of Biology

Monique Meier has held the professorship for Didactics of Biology since the end of last year. Prof. Meier worked for a long time as a research assistant and lecturer at the University of Kassel, later worked as a postdoc at the University of Heidelberg and held a substitute professorship at Leibniz Universität Hannover before moving to TU Dresden. At the Chair of Didactics of Biology at TU Dresden, she wants to combine the perspectives of the subject with those of the lifeworld of future teachers and their future pupils. From the coming winter semester onwards, the students of the newly introduced degree program "Teacher Training Biology" will be able to experience the diversity of biology in the laboratory as well as in the seminar room, in the digital space as well as in nature in a varied and practical way.

Dr. Jan England was the managing director of a software company in Dresden for 30 years. His specialisations are consulting and managing IT projects as well as strategic work.

           

Julius Weyer

Julius Weyer has been working at TUD since 2018 and was employed in the SLM Coordination department as an application supervisor for the Student Life Cycle Management System "CampusNet". Chemistry without detours: TUD researchers shorten process for producing phosphorus-containing chemicals

Prof. Jan J. Weigand and his team have achieved a significant breakthrough in the production of phosphorus-containing chemicals. In a recent publication in the prestigious journal "Nature Synthesis", they present an innovative synthesis method that requires only two steps to enable the previously complex production of functionalised phosphates. This promising innovation not only contributes to environmental protection, but also significantly reduces time and costs. In addition, it opens up the possibility for the industry to act more independently of external countries. The research team has already applied for two patents for this new process

Junior Fellow Dr. Ahmed Elshafei

Dr Ahmed Elshafei holds a PhD in both mathematics and architecture and is currently a Dresden Junior Fellow at TU Dresden. He is a member of the Geometric Modelling and Visualisation group at the Faculty of Mathematics led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Daniel Lordick. Dr Elshafei's research focuses on the modularisation of lightweight concrete structures for 3D printing and contributes to an interdisciplinary project that combines basic research with practical applications. His professional experience in both fields, including his work at renowned architectural firms such as UNStudio, allows him to put mathematical concepts into practice in a meaningful way.
Fellowships are available 365 days a year. Applications for 2024 are expected to be open from September 2023.

How can fruit flies help cure Alzheimer's? | Short question to Prof. Stefanie Schirmeier

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's are diseases in which nerve cells die and thus the functionality of the brain decreases. At the Faculty of Biology, Prof. Stefanie Schirmeier and her team are researching to better understand such diseases. With the help of fruit flies, they are investigating how the glial cells - helper cells of the neurons - adapt to changed circumstances. This episode of "The Short Question" was produced in collaboration with students from the "Biology in Society" Master's program.

Understanding life down to the smallest detail | #BrightMinds: Otger Campàs

The Physics of Life (PoL) Cluster of Excellence is taking on one of the great challenges of our time: researching life down to its smallest components in order to better understand the development of diseases and to be able to develop new therapies on this basis. Prof. Otger Campàs holds the Chair of Tissue Dynamics and is the Cluster's spokesperson. With his interdisciplinary team, he tries to find out how cells organise themselves and contribute to the construction of organs during embryonic development. He is one of eight passionate scientists featured in the film "Bright Minds. Excellent Research." provides insights into the cutting-edge research at TUD. He explains in the video what makes Dresden special as a research location.

Summer reception of the Faculty of Biology

On 8 June 2023, alumni, staff, former colleagues as well as friends and supporters of the Faculty of Biology were cordially invited to come together in a pleasant summery atmosphere. The meeting offered the opportunity to get to know each other, exchange ideas, make contacts and, above all, celebrate together.

100 years of GAMM- a scientific art exhibition

Accompanying the GAMM Annual Conference, a scientific art exhibition was held in the Auditorium Centre from 30 May to 2 June 2023 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. The Dresden artists Wolfram Neumann and Denise Walther showed their interpretation of the interplay between applied mathematics and mechanics together with objects and installations by Prof. Daniel Lordick, Dr. Marco Salvalaglio and Prof. Axel Voigt from the Faculty of Mathematics, which combine art, science and technology. These works were complemented by exhibits from the historical collections of the TU Dresden, mathematical models, gear models and calculating machines, as well as a new exhibit from the Erlebnisland Mathematik.
