Interview: Why is leadership culture needed at universities?

© T. Fiedler

Interview with Max Schulz

Advisor for Strategic Personnel Development, Directorate 2

Good leadership promotes a positive working environment and increases the satisfaction of employees. As a "soft" factor for the attractiveness of an employer, leadership should not be underestimated. TUD has therefore initiated a multi-stage leadership culture project to encourage and qualify managerial staff in their responsibilities. Max Schulz, advisor for strategic personnel development, explains what this means and why a leadership culture is indispensable at universities.

Intercultural Days Dresden:
Stolen Books, looted Art - Insights into Provenance Research in Dresden

How do the pieces of art end up in museums and books in libraries? Provenance research focuses on the history and owners of such cultural objects - from their creation to their current location. Occasionally, gaps or inconsistencies come to light, such as in the case of unlawful expropriations.

As part of the Intercultural Days, provenance researchers from the Dresden State Art Collections and the SLUB will highlight selected cases of how they trace the origin of objects. The event will take place on October 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the COSMO Science Forum in the Kulturpalast. Free of charge.

Protection against UV radiation

The most common occupational carcinogen in Germany is squamous cell carcinoma of the skin together with some other subtypes and preliminary stages of white skin cancer. However, the risk can be significantly reduced with simple protective measures such as shifting working hours, shading, clothing, hats and sunscreen. For TUD employees whose outdoor job activities regularly expose them to natural UV radiation for an hour or more a day, TUD Occupational Health Services offers occupational health screening.

Gradual return to work

After a prolonged illness, employees are often not yet able to return to their full capacity. At the same time, many would like to return to their jobs and keep in touch with the workplace and their colleagues. Gradual reintegration (SWE) gives employees in Germany the opportunity to gradually return to work. The integration team provides advice on this and other measures. Those affected can contact the Occupational Integration Management (OIM).

“Shaping diversity” audit: First results presented to the University Executive Board

In the audit "Shaping Diversity", measures were developed in a broad participation process. These are intended to anchor the topic of diversity more firmly as a cross-sectional task at TUD and to sustainably promote change processes with regard to equal-opportunity participation in the long term. At the beginning of August, the Vice Rector University Culture, Professor Roswitha Böhm, together with the auditor, Professor Christian Ganseuer, presented these measures to the University Executive Board. In September, the next audit workshop will take place on the topic of "Diversity in monitoring processes - current status and potentials".

TUD International Campus successfully "Chair-ished”

During Sustainability Week, the "Claiming Campus" pop-up workshop built 60 stools to create places of exchange on campus. The participants then distributed their stools around the campus.
Many stools seem to have migrated indoors, no doubt due to their attractiveness. Please release them back onto campus for the TUD campus to be "chair-ished", taking the opportunity to engage in conversation with others.
