Social Change is Uncomfortable

Large scale societal change, as tackling climate change requires, is posed with challenging or even disrupting much of what is generally normal, daily routine and structurally given. This process necessarily has to be initiated and enforced by diverse and contextually specific agents who are willing to engage in uncomfortable and often personally difficult interactions to alter the ongoing happenings.

Currently, one might think about activists from the Last Generation who are trying to do exactly this. Whether the anger elicited around these kinds of disruption of normality really opens up pathways to a better society is unclear, but the underlying premise is valid: the social practices we engage in daily within our routines must undergo substantial changes, and it requires moments of disruption to initiate this change collectively to break free of the equilibrium that is called status quo. Inherently, such acts are disconcerting, but I think we have to be uncomfortable in many daily situations if we want to change society in a meaningful way. By keeping in mind the possibility of a more promising future that can be gained, this discomfort may become a bit easier to bear.

Designate – A report on the experience of the interdisciplinary communication of research results

The challenge to explain research results to members of another discipline is one we face not only within our projects or the TUDiSC network but also externally, on conferences or events for the wider public. As members of the project DESIGNATE we, Deborah Löschner and Helena K. Jahromi, took up the challenge in both regards in June.
Psychologist Deborah accompanied Helena to the IP law conference “GRUR Junge Wissenschaft” in Potsdam, where she was warmly welcomed even as an “out-law”. Our presentation received great interest and was followed by discussions on the topic of fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration. Only a week later Helena joined the DESIGNATE presentation table at the Dresden Science Night located within various projects of engineering psychology. Besides interesting conversations with citizens who had not yet heard of the concept of online manipulation, the event also offered ample opportunities to explain the legal view to fellow colleagues from the psychology department, opening new perspectives and interesting approaches to the topic.
If you’d like to hear more about our experiences with communicating our research results to external audiences, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly.

Teaser "Myths of Disruption", December, 6, 2023: Adrian Daub

It is our intention, in the run up to the next TUDiSC conference, to reveal with each newsletter another part of the puzzle, giving you a clearer picture of how the 3-day event will unfold and what is to be expected in terms of content.

This month’s teaser spotlights Keynote Speaker Adrian Daub. Not only Professor of Comparative Literature; Professor of German Studies; J.E. Wallace Sterling Professor of the Humanities; and Director, Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, Daub is also an avid writer and cultural critic. With articles published in Die Zeit, The Nation, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and The Guardian, and multiple books published, he has managed to achieve that rare feat in science communication of bridging the gap between academia and the wider scientifically curious public. His most recent books include
„Was das Valley denken nennt“ (Edition Suhrkamp, 2020) und „Cancel Culture Transfer: Wie eine moralische Panik die Welt erobert“ (Edition Suhrkamp, 2022).

We look forward immensely to his cooperation with TUDiSC!

Exhibition "Voices" by Zorka Wollny

With “Voices / Stimmen“, Kunsthaus Dresden presents Zorka Wollny’s first solo exhibition in Germany and opens a view into an extraordinary oeuvre between performance and composition, collectivity and activism. How do we make our voices heard on the threshold of a shared future? And how do we listen in a radically new way, so that human and non-human forms of life become perceptible again in their interconnectedness? Zorka Wollny’s artistic and musical works give physical and performative form to feelings of anger and fear, resistance, community, and empathy. The exhibition is opened from June, 2nd to August, 27th at the Kunsthaus.
