Evaluating Disruptions

In some cases, it is difficult to fully grasp the scope of a task in advance; the dimensions of the venture become clear only through action. This applies to various aspects of life, such as significant biographical turning points, the commencement of a Ph.D., parenthood, transitioning to new professional positions, relocating, or embarking on new research projects. The outcome is not clear yet; it is not foreseeable whether one can be successful. This can be intimidating but also stimulating.
Individual success or failure represents just one of many criteria for the outcome. Some of these bold endeavors require embracing risk, even in the face of the possibility of failure. The consequences of these decisions do not immediately manifest following the event, even if the initial responses are troubling and sometimes disconcerting effects. Individual risks can break free from path dependencies and reduce feedback effects, making it easier to undergo new trials the next time, opening up possibilities in the future and providing learning opportunities. Only when we are able to assess how disruptions have opened up room for action and decision-making and how they have influenced change in the long term can we try to evaluate them.

New PI: Welcome Aboard Dr. Katharina Kaesling

We are delighted to warmly welcome JProf. Dr. Katharina Kaesling to the TUDiSC network, as she embarks on her new role as PI for the project Designate. As Junior Professor for civil law, intellectual property, in particular patent law, and legal issues of AI at the TU Dresden, Dr. Kaesling brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge, from which TUDiSC can only benefit. In particular Dr Kaesling’s specialism in the area of legal questions relating to artificial intelligence is sure to strengthen the work of Designate and its work on ‘Dark Patterns’. She will support the focus of the project on vulnerable groups and thereby expand perspectives on digital disruptions. We look forward to seeing the fruits of this exciting collaboration and welcome her to the TUDiSC network.
To follow the work of Designate, please visit the project website.

Central to the discussions was the theme of the digital transformation of science communication and its future implications on scholarly publishing. The event was rounded off by the presentation of a graphic recording, which provided visual documentation of the forum's content.

There is always a reason to celebrate - the beginning of a new academic year or the enrollment of the new students only being a couple of them. On October 5th, old and new successes can be celebrated at the Campusfest on the campus lawn. From 4:30 p.m., the TU Big Band, student music and dance groups will entertain. At 8:00 p.m., the festivities will continue with the PARTYPROFs until 10:00 pm.

What needs to be restored in times of change?

To mark the European Day of Restoration on October 15, die Kustodie invites visitors to its permanent exhibition between 10am and 2pm to explore historical objects, teaching aids, and specimens in the permanent exhibition at the BZW, as well as to learn about contemporary restoration methods and new developments in the profession.
