Prof. Daniel Leising

Professor of Assessment and Intervention, Faculty of Psychology

In December, TUD is holding a university forum on power and the abuse of power in science. But what does this actually mean? Prof. Daniel Leising is a member of the "Network against Abuse of Power in Science" and in this interview he explains how complex the problem is, what encourages the abuse of power and how it can be countered.

University forum on power and abuse of power in science

At the university forum on power and abuse of power, TUD members of all status groups are encouraged to contribute their opinions, experiences and questions. The forum will not only address the concept of power and the various forms of abuse of power at universities, but will also look at specific case studies and address the hurdles in dealing with abuses of power. The university forum will be held on December 12 (in German) and December 14 (in English) in the Ballroom Dülferstraße (Dülfer-Saal). Register now!

A cappella music for Advent – Christmas concert of the University Choir

On December 10 at 5 pm, the Dresden University Choir will present its Christmas concert "Venite, Gaudete" at the Loschwitz Church. Starting with the Advent song "Veni, veni, Emmanuel" the evening will proceed from a simple monophony to a colorful 16-voiced harmony and end in contemplative silence. This year, however, the concert is planned to be more than simply a joyful Adventus Domini (Arrival of the Lord). Given the political situation around the world, a happy Gaudete will literally leave a bitter taste on everyone’s lips. The two movements from "Un soir de neige" (A Night of Snow), which Poulenc wrote at Christmas in the winter of 1944, reflect this pensive tone, while at the same time enchanting the listener with their musical poetry. Admission is free. A donation will be appreciated.

Dresden maypole dance –
dancers wanted

On April 27, 2024, the traditional raising of the maypole by Dresden's carpenters will finally take place again on Dresden's Altmarkt after a four year break. Afterwards, the maypole will be danced around in a festive ribbon dance in which the 20 meter long ribbons will be braided. The whole event is framed by a hearty carpenter's clap, a performance by the folklore dance ensemble "Thea Maass" from the TU Dresden and sociable dances for spectators.

The ensemble is looking for 30 dance enthusiasts for the ribbon dance, no dance experience is required. However, participation in all rehearsal dates is essential. Sign up until February 7, 2024.

Rehearsal dates:
March 15 / March 21 / April 4 / April 11 / April 16 / April 18 / April 23 / April 25

Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections prepares sample books from the Historical Collection of Dyes for digitization

The dye collection at TUD houses about 3,000 color sample books. This collection has received funding from the Coordination Office for the Preservation of Written Cultural Heritage, financed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Color sample books are important documents for the history of dyes. Thanks to the funding, contaminated specimens can be cleaned and damaged works restored before the planned digitization.

Do something good on project day?

Each structural unit has one day available per calendar year for team-building activities. Why not use this day to do something good together? Be it renovating a social children's and youth project, tackling a nature conservation project or sorting donations. To make this easier for TUD teams, the campaign "TUD engagiert" has been launched: The volunteer agency ehrensache.jetzt of the Bürgerstiftung Dresden civic trust and Directorate 9 University Culture organize volunteer assignments in non-profit initiatives for interested teams.

Live experience at a distance: Lecture and remote concert at "Sound & Science"

"Sound & Science", the successful cooperation between the Dresden Music Festival and TUD, will take you into the world of real-time technologies in the coming season. Prof. Frank Ellinger and Dr. Christin Lübke (both TUD) as well as Prof. Alexander Carôt (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences) will explore the question of to what extent do real-time musical transmissions create the same feeling as live concerts. Afterwards, the audience will have the opportunity to make up their own mind at a "remote" concert. Tickets for the event to take place on May 29, 2024 are available for purchase in advance. Students receive discounts.

MIDEM presents lecture series "Between polarization and consensus: Democracy under pressure"

Our society is divided and democracy is at risk - this is one of the most popular diagnoses of the present day. But is the constantly repeated thesis of a loss of social cohesion true? Is our democracy under pressure? In the winter semester 2023/24, a lecture series by the Mercator Forum Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) will get to the bottom of this question. In a hybrid format, six external experts will present their perspectives and findings on the topic of polarization and cohesion and discuss them with the participants.

Making women visible in science! Calendar of female PhD students from history at TUD

In recent years, the TUD has increasingly devoted itself to the study of women in history who shaped our university through their work and acted as pioneers in science. Now is the time to put these women in the spotlight. As a further building block in these efforts, a unique calendar shows 12 female doctoral students from history. Further initiatives will continue to highlight the important and inspiring role women play in history and the present.

"WHAT’S Next? Develop your postdoc career!" to become the Charlotte Bühler Program in 2024

With the renaming of the postdoctoral career program, another outstanding female scientist at TUD becomes visible. Charlotte Bühler studied psychology, received her doctorate in 1918 in Munich and achieved her habilitation (highest academic degree to become a full professor) in 1920 in Dresden – the first woman to do so at our university. She thus serves as a role model for all female scientists at the TUD. She is considered to be one of the most pioneering researchers in the field of child and youth psychology and the founder of humanistic psychology. The program is aimed at female postdocs and postdoctoral researchers from all DRESDEN-concept institutions.

TUD lectures: How does inclusive product design work?

Inclusion – always thinking of everyone? Unfortunately, the development process of products and applications often misses the opportunity from the outset to take into account the perspectives of people with special usage requirements. Prof. Sebastian Pannasch (Chair of Engineering Psychology and Applied Cognitive Research) will present possibilities for an inclusive product design approach in the upcoming TUD lecture. The lecture will take place on December 13 at 6 pm at the COSMO Wissenschaftsforum.

New information on the "Shaping diversity" audit

In order to anchor the topic of diversity more firmly in the breadth of university structures, TUD is currently undergoing the "Shaping diversity" audit. In this context, the fourth workshop, in which courses of action for integrating diversity into monitoring processes were identified, was held at the end of September. The audit process will be concluded with the final workshop on February 7, 2024. Here progress made through the process will be evaluated. In March, the ceremony for awarding certificates to those universities that have successfully completed the audit process will follow.

Counseling compass – advisory services for prospective and current students

Sometimes you need some help finding your bearings around your studies. The accessible counseling compass helps students and those interested in doing exactly that. The TUD and its cooperation institutions offer various advisory and other services for those grappling with questions or challenges at university, including diversity. The counseling compass quickly and clearly indicates what these are, and who those seeking advice can turn to for a particular topic.

Active break: New courses from January

Is working at a desk, in a laboratory or in a workshop causing you muscle tension and pain? How about an active break? The 15-minute exercise unit not only improves physical and mental well-being, but is also considered working time. From January 8, 2024, the "active break" will again be offered in many places on campus – often not far from the workplace. Enrollment is via the DHSZ booking portal.

Skin protection in winter

Freezing temperatures outside and low-humidity indoor air caused by heating promote the drying out of the skin, which can lead to eczema and the development of allergies. Workers who are also exposed to damp work due to their occupation – for example, having to wash their hands frequently or wear protective gloves – receive a skin protection plan from their employer and skin protection products such as skin care creams. The TUD health service is very happy to advise both the structural units in the preparation of a skin protection plan and selection of protective products as well as the employees in the context of occupational health care.

Headache and migraine – support for employees and students

Two out of three adults in Germany experience headaches. Every day, 900,000 people suffer migraine attacks; 100,000 of them cannot leave their beds because of this. But preventive measures can effectively mitigate and even prevent headache and migraine, which is why TUD continues to offer free access to supporting services, including the Kopfschmerzwissen (Headache Knowledge) app.

Sometimes, items need to be transported around campus, but not always by car. There are now some cargo bikes available on the campus. Two are on hand for members of the university to rent free of charge. The cargo bike of the Green Office and the Student Environmental Initiative (tuuwi) offer a sustainable alternative. Simply go to the website for more information and book the bike for your next transportation needs.

Overview map of tree sponsorships published on the TUD campus

There are many, sometimes very personal reasons that motivate people to support the preservation of the tree population on the TUD campus. A map of the sponsorships now presents the donors in detail and contains information on location, tree type and planting year. The tree sponsorship initiative was launched in 2018 by the Student Environmental Initiative (tuuwi) together with the TU Dresden Foundation, the Environmental Protection Group in the Facility Management Directorate and the Saxon State Enterprise for Real Estate and Construction Management. Since then, about 5 sponsorships have been realized annually.
