Hip, hip, hooray - 10 years of GA!

Support - Qualification - Advise: The Graduate Academy

Make yourself a cup of coffee and make yourself comfortable.
This newsletter will be a tad longer than usual.

This time, for once, the focus is on us because we are looking back:
  •   on most proud moments and milestones,
  •   on the events that we have enjoyed the most,
  •   on results that we are incredibly pleased with.
Over the past ten years, we have:
  • conducted more than 1,000 workshops (over a third of them ourselves) online and in person,
  • listened to your individual questions and challenges in almost 3,000 consultations and coaching sessions, and answered at least as many questions via telephone or email,
  • supported your travels and cooperations with nearly 3,050 funding grants.

And we still have a lot of plans and ideas waiting to be implemented — so things remain dynamic!
Since we can only do all this by working together, a big THANK YOU goes to:
  • All our colleagues who work with us daily to find constructive solutions, overcome challenges, and (almost) never lose their patience or sense of humor.
  • All our former colleagues who have moved on to other opportunities will remain part of GA.
  • Our members for whom we do our best every day and who always give us good reasons to do so with great enthusiasm!
Here's to the next ten!

Make a wish!

Between March and April 2022, we conducted our first Postdoc Survey jointly with our colleagues from the HZDR:
  • What conditions do postdocs work under, and to what extent are they satisfied?
  • What career goals do Postdocs pursue?
  • What kind of support do they wish for?
Over 1,200 Postdocs from the TUD and the HZDR took the opportunity to share their needs with us, based on which we are adapting our training and support services and developing new ones.

We thank you & fulfilling your requests is already in progress!

Let's hear what our Fellows have to say ...

Maria Reiche Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Maria Reiche Fellowship provided me with a remarkable opportunity to dedicate focused time to craft and submit an independent research proposal for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) postdoctoral fellowship. This experience was instrumental in advancing my academic and research career. The kick-off meeting was not only enlightening but also incredibly inspiring. It afforded me the privilege of connecting with a diverse group of talented female researchers within the university.

Furthermore, I must acknowledge the remarkable support I received from the Graduate Academy. Their efficient assistance was instrumental in simplifying the bureaucratic process related to my residence permit. This not only reduced administrative hassles but also allowed me to focus on my research.

Additionally, the resources provided by the Graduate Academy opened doors to international training programs. These programs enriched my knowledge, broadened my perspective, and enhanced my research skills, making them a pivotal part of my academic growth. In summary, the Maria Reiche Fellowship, coupled with the support and opportunities offered by the Graduate Academy, has been a transformative experience that has significantly propelled my academic career forward. I am sincerely grateful for the invaluable support and opportunities it has provided.

Supporting and motivating doctoral candidates properly is one of the most critical tasks of university lecturers.

Completing a doctorate successfully is an outstanding achievement for the doctoral candidate and the supervisor.

In 2016, we began offering regular in-depth workshops for supervisors on this topic. The aim is to support participants in selecting doctoral candidates according to meaningful criteria and providing (even) better supervision.

A milestone comes to life

Attracting, recruiting, and retaining the best minds at all career levels was and is the goal of TU Dresden. Initially, special attention was paid to doctoral candidates and postdocs representing the university's future.

Establishing the Graduate Academy (GA) as a central point of contact for early career researchers was firmly anchored in TU Dresden's institutional Excellence Strategy to offer them the best possible conditions.

The Graduate Academy began its work at the end of August 2013.
