Dear alumni
At the beginning of February, the University of Göttingen received the sobering news that none of the five draft proposals for Clusters of Excellence that we submitted eight months ago for Germany’s Excellence Strategy competition were invited to submit a full proposal. We are deeply disappointed about this as we have unfortunately already fallen short of the goal that we had set ourselves for the coming years.
What remains unchanged is that excellent research is taking place here in Göttingen and will continue to do so. The excellent individual achievements of our researchers, our proven interdisciplinary research focuses, the strength of our „kleine Fächer„, our integration into the Göttingen Campus and our active involvement in shaping the great challenges of our time are exactly the same today as they were before.
One of these major challenges continues to be the sustainability. A large proportion of our research projects are directly or indirectly related to this topic and sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in teaching. We also want to act sustainably with regard to staff and career development, as well as to finances, so that the University of Göttingen can keep on running smoothly. It has become clear in the last few years that this is not a simple task. And, of course, we will continue with our energy-saving refurbishment projects in 2024. We are still planning a large photovoltaic system on the land in Deppoldshausen that has been leased by the University for decades.
If, like us, sustainability is important to you, I look forward to your participation in the workshop
"Zukunftswerkstatt - Ideas for a Sustainable Göttingen", an alumni project to identify and solve sustainability challenges in the University and the City of Göttingen.
