Sustainable metals in the focus of a new DFG priority program

The German Research Foundation is setting up eleven new Priority Programs (SPP), which are due to start in 2025. One of the funded programs is SPP 2489 "DaMic - Data-driven Alloy and Microstructure Design of Sustainable Metallic Construction Materials". The coordinator is Prof. Markus Kästner, Chair of Computational and Experimental Solid Mechanics. Metallic materials of the future must become more sustainable: Currently, 40 percent of all industrial greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the production and processing of metallic materials. In addition, the extraction of the corresponding minerals produces several billion tons of by-products every year, some of which are harmful. DaMic aims to lay the essential scientific foundations for the development of sustainable metals and contribute to the establishment of a new field of research at the interface of digitalization and sustainability.

New high-resolution tactile sensor can be used to detect prostate cancer

In collaboration with Meta (Stanford University), the TUD and the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden, a research paper was produced that presents the use of touch sensors for the early detection of prostate cancer. Thanks to vision-based tactile sensors, robotic hands can now also feel tactile perceptions. To do this, they need to achieve the strength and spatial resolution of human fingertips. The paper presents a new approach to the miniaturization of tactile sensors. Fiber bundles are used as optical lines. They have a diameter of 15 mm and are therefore smaller than an average human fingertip.

Science in the classroom - TUD special page in the Sächsische Zeitung

It is well known that children and young people are very curious. The question of "why" when looking at various phenomena in the world sometimes drives parents crazy. Schools also reach their limits here. The TUD, with its cutting-edge research, wants to help close this gap and has set up countless projects for pupils and teachers as well as collaborations with individual schools. Bundling and coordinating all of this is the task of TUD's School Contact Point, a contact point for bringing schools and the university into contact with each other. In the current special page of the Sächsische Zeitung, the work of the school contact point and selected projects, such as the EduInf - TUD's computer science student laboratory and CeTI's school activities, are presented.

3rd Lusatia network event on the topic of robotics

What are the opportunities for robotics in the future? What does it take to bring IoT start-ups to Lusatia? These and other questions were addressed by representatives from science, business and politics at the 3rd Lusatia Network Event at the TUD. After introductory speeches and subsequent keynote speeches on research projects at the TUD and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg on the topic of robotics, there was an insight into the company Wandelbots, a successful spin-off from the TUD. In addition, a large number of Chairs presented their demonstrators. In the GeTUGether Zone in front of the Alte Mensa, visitors could marvel at the plantation robot Elwobot and the sniffer robot Sniffbot. In the Dülfersaal itself, there was a poster exhibition and smaller VR and robotics demonstrations. The Max and Moritz robots and work from the CeTI Cluster of Excellence could be viewed in the foyer. In a startup pitch, five (pre-)startups presented their business model and classified how they would use the infrastructure in Lusatia. The jury board provided suggestions and helpful tips. The conference was rounded off with a panel discussion on the topic of "Research transfer in Lusatia with robotics and IoT startups".

Seating with professors

Did you want to be a professor as a child? Do you even have time for your own research? And how annoying are students who are late for lectures? The TUD's social media team has peppered TUD professors with questions. In the "Sitzgelegenheit", they reveal how strenuous the path to a Chair was, whether they always read the compulsory literature during their studies and which part of their work as scientists they enjoy the most. Prof. Kristin Paetzold-Byhain from the School of Engineering Sciences answered our questions.
