Call for Abstracts: Disrupting Scientific Boundaries

The scientific description and monitoring of increasingly complex crises and challenges require interdisciplinary research approaches and strategies as well as modes of thinking and acting that go beyond the rigid boundaries of the academic system. Such endeavors are thus being more and more promoted and demanded. Due to this reason the TUD Dresden University of Technology launched the measure “Disruption and societal change” (TUDiSC), where researchers from many different disciplines undertake a joint effort to investigate disruptions from a conceptual and practical perspective. TUDiSC was and is an ambitious project, that requires establishing common ground, integrating expertise and constructively overcoming differences. This process is in itself pushing the boundaries of strict disciplinary research and emanates in the best case a positively disruptive energy. For the 5th TUDiSC conference we would like to explore those scientific boundaries. We will be looking at conditions for successful interdisciplinarity, exploring the intersection between research, art and activism; and examine the interface between science and society.

Please see the call for abstracts for more details and information relating to submission. The deadline is May 13th, 2024.

Dark Patterns Workshop: Manipulative Design on the Web!?

On May 28, a workshop on the topic of "Dark Patterns" will take place at the COSMO Science Forum. This workshop will provide information from a legal and psychological perspective on forms of presence, modes of action and the regulation of design patterns that are intended to conceal information, attract our attention or urge us to buy a product. Based on this, participants will take action together: Where are you being manipulated online? Are you doing anything about it and if so, what? What other strategies for dealing with dark patterns are conceivable? What do you need to protect yourself from this type of influence?

Transformation East | Lecture Series on East German History, Politics and Society

The fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany are regarded as defining historical events for the Federal Republic. The post-socialist transformation, in particular, has given rise to its own tensions. From right-wing extremism to populism, from the liquidation of East German companies to the current development of cutting-edge research, from the marginalization experiences of citizens to their characterization as avantgarde. Stories from and about the East are multifaceted.

With the public lecture series "Transformation East" at the COSMO Science Forum,  sociologists, historians and political scientists will provide an insight into the various aspects of their research. The lecture series started on April 25, 2024 with Janek Treiber focusing on "East Germany in the light of the state elections" from a political science perspective, and runs until June 19, 2024.

HAIT Colloquium | Summer Semester 24

We would like to bring your attention to a new colloquium from the Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarianism Studies which has been put together for the summer semester of 2024. The series of events are set to explore the requirements and limits of scientific work and the intersection of research, art and activism as an interface between science and society. The thread running through all events is the question of whether history can still enlighten and whether it still has a future as as form of societal critique.

Please find the corresponding program below and visit the event page for more information.

Conference | Research Group “Reorganization of Knowledge Practices” | Weizenbaum Institute

What is expertise? Who owns it? And where does it originate from? These questions are not new but have become more pressing with the advent of digital transformation. Digitalization is becoming constantly more crucial in producing knowledge and generating expertise. Far beyond the automatization of existing standardized and coordinated procedures, numerous digital applications are increasingly generating information that directly influence social and academic knowledge production and decision-making.

On this backdrop the spring conference of the research group “Reorganization of Knowledge Practices” (Weizenbaum Institute) looks to explore questions of expertise in digital transformation, both with regard to different areas of society and to discuss them comparatively. The conference will take place on May 23 and May 24 in cooperation with the DGS-Section “Science and Technology Studies” at the Weizenbaum Institute Berlin.

Registration is possible until May 15.
