Faculty Day with inaugural lectures and award ceremonies

On June 5, 2024, many (former) faculty members and guests attended the inaugural lectures by Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf and Prof. Dr. Peter Schäfer, the presentation of the Dr. Feldbausch Prize and Dr. Händel Prize as well as the awarding of Prof. Dr. Oliver Krancher as Distinguished Research Fellow 2024.

Graduate farewell ceremony and summer party

Following the Faculty Day, the stage belonged to our 2023/24 graduates. Almost 150 graduates came to celebrate the successful completion of their studies with their friends, family and faculty members at a ceremony in the Heinz-Schönfeld-lecture hall followed by a summer party.

Discussion event with Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm and Prof. Dr. Dominik Möst

On June 13, 2024, Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm (TU Nürnberg and member of the German Council of Economic Experts) and Prof. Dr. Dominik Möst (Chair of Business Administration, esp. Energy Economics) discussed the topic of "Energy and climate policy: Which path will Germany and Europe take?". The discussion was hosted by Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann (Chair of Economics, esp. International Economics).

Dr. Nagwan Abu El-Ella new member of the TUD|excite team

Since March 1, 2024, Dr. Nagwan Abu El-Ella is a new member of the TUD|excite team with Prof. Dr. Pinkwart. As Head of excite|FUTURELAB, Nagwan Abu El-Ella will develop the accompanying research in the areas of innovation, transfer and entrepreneurship. Her research interests are in the areas of innovation and change management and open innovation, with a particular focus on employee engagement, trust and IPR management.

Prof. Dr. Alfred Benedikt Brendel moves to Indiana University

Prof. Dr. Alfred Benedikt Brendel has received and accepted an appointment at Indiana University (USA). From July 1, 2024, he will be researching and teaching at the world-renowned Kelly School of Business. Benedikt Brendel has held the Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Intelligent Systems and Services at the Faculty since October 2020 and, together with his team, has successfully researched and taught on topics such as the future of work, neuro-information systems and intelligent mobility. We say thank you and wish him all the best!

Sporting team events: REWE Team Challenge and Rowing against Cancer 2024

The Rewe Team Challenge is one of the biggest company runs in Germany. This year it took place for the 15th time on June 12th. The faculty was well represented with a total of 7 teams. 

Another sporting event took place on June 8 as part of the charity regatta "Rowing against Cancer". Two interdisciplinary teams from the faculty started here. € 250 is donated per boat, which goes to the "Leben mit Krebs" foundation.

Academy of Management (AOM) Best Paper Award for Isabell Lippert and Sarah Müller-Sägebrecht

Sarah Müller-Sägebrecht (Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation) and Isabell Lippert (Chair of Information Systems, esp. Business Engineering) have received a Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management (Management Education and Development Division). Their research paper entitled "In Tandem with ChatGPT-4: How LLM Enhance Entrepreneurship Education & Business Model Innovation" examines how Large Language Models (LLMs) can be used in teaching.

           

Best Paper Award of CER Fintech Symposium 2024 for Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf and Matthias Mattusch

Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf and Matthias Mattusch (Chair of Business Administration, esp. Finance and Financial Technology) received the SEK 10,000 Best Paper Award at the FinTech Symposium of the Center for Economic Studies (CER) 2024 in Sundsvall, Sweden. The paper examines the promise of fintechs to revolutionise the financial world. The authors document, among other things, the failure of fintech companies, financing success and innovation capacity in the opaque market for fintech start-ups in the paper.

           

Super Supervisor 2024: Prof. Dr. Martin Wiener

The Graduate Academy (GA) granted its Award for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision for the 8th time. This year, the selection committee has decided to award the prize for outstanding doctoral supervision to Prof. Dr. Martin Wiener (Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Business Engineering).

The prize is endowed with 3,000 euros, which will be dedicated to the support of early-career researchers. Nominations can be submitted by current and former doctoral candidates and postdocs.

           

Prof. Dr. Udo Buscher receives Reviewer Award from the European Journal of Operational Research

Prof. Dr. Udo Buscher (Chair of Business Administration, esp. Industrial Management) was awarded the "2024 Editors' award for excellence in reviewing" for his work as a reviewer for the European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR).

Start of the project "WE! recycle fibres"

In April 2024 the project “WE! recycle fibres” was launched with the aim of organizing the efficient return and recycling of high-quality fibre composites in the “Elbe Valley Saxony” region. In the project, which is funded by the BMBF with around 400,000 euros, the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Logistics (Prof. Dr. Rainer Lasch), is involved in route planning and the conception of profit-maximizing cooperation between the partners in practice.

Statement on the planned increase in fees for the use of research data

The Scientific Advisory Group (WBK) of the Research Data Centers of the Federal and State Statistical Offices (FDZ) of the Federal Statistical Office (DESTATIS), of which Prof. Dr. Kamila Cygan-Rehm (Chair of Quantitative Methods, esp. Econometrics) is a member, has published a statement on the planned increase in fees for data use and services.

Journal article about fake news in Scientific Reports

In their paper "Ability of detecting and willingness to share fake news", K. Peren Arin, Deni Mazrekai and Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum (Chair of Economics, esp. Public Finance) examine individual determinants of the ability to recognise fake news and the tendency to share it. A distinction is made between intentional and accidental sharing of fake news, with accidental sharing occurring significantly more frequently than intentional sharing. The results show that older, male, high-income and politically left-wing respondents are better at recognising fake news.

Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Information Management visits Stellenbosch University, South Africa

The Chair of Information Systems, esp. Information Management is expanding its international collaborations. The visit to Stellenbosch University aimed to establish academic contacts for future research work, mainly in the areas of digital education and knowledge management. The trip was funded as part of the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility Exchange Programme.

Emma Lloyd receives start-up funding from the HERMES network

Emma Lloyd (Junior Professorship in Sustainability Assessment and Policy) is delighted to receive start-up funding from the HERMES network for an international research project. She will receive 1,000 euros to conduct research on "The role of emerging technologies for sustainability accounting practices in supply chains" together with researchers from HEC Liège.

Distinguished Research Fellows visiting the faculty

At the beginning of this year, an external selection committee selected Beth Embry (University of Kansas), Oliver Krancher (IT University Copenhagen), Bismark Singh (University of Southampton) and Dimitrios Xefteris (University of Cyprus) as Distinguished Research Fellows 2024.

In the meantime, all fellows have started working on specific research projects together with their hosts, have made their first visits to the Faculty or are planning (repeated) visits in the near future. For example, Dimitrios Xefteris will be a guest at the Faculty from July 7-21, 2024 and Bismark Singh from August 5 till September 14, 2024.

What does sugar do to our bodies? Can you get addicted to sugar? What impact would a sugar tax have on consumption in Germany? In a new episode of "Gute Frage", experts from TU Dresden talk about the topic of sugar. Among them is Katharina Bettig (Chair of Economics, esp. Public Economics) (from minute 16:51).

60 minutes: Hydrogen economy

On May 29, 2024, Prof. Dr. Dominik Möst (Chair of Business Administration, esp. Energy Economics) and Prof. Dr. Fritjof Staiß (Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg) discussed with Prof. Dr. Joachim Ragnitz (ifo Dresden and TU Dresden) the potentials and technical hurdles in the use of hydrogen economy in Germany and Europe.

LNDWDD 2024 - Combinatorial optimization to try out yourself

The Chair of Business Administration, esp. Industrial Management participated in the "Dresdner Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften" (Dresden Long Night of Science) on June 14, 2024. The do-it-yourself combinatorial optimization problems were met with great enthusiasm by the young and old. Packing problems could be tried out with the games Ubongo and Katamino. Further, children, teenagers, and adults could optimally plan orders on machines with the help of colored Lego Duplo bricks.

Why do markets organize our economy?: Interactive lecture at the children's university

In the summer semester, inquisitive children once again had the opportunity to attend the Children's University and follow four exciting lectures. One lecture was given by Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann (Chair of Economics, esp. International Economics), who had a hands-on experiment to explain in a playful way how prices are created.

Encounter and exchange at eye level at the TUD hands-on festival in Prohlis

A lively exchange at eye level and fun with many hands-on activities, music, a cheerful atmosphere and one or two controversial discussions – that was the hands-on festival that the TUD organized together with Zuhause in Prohlis e. V. and Quartiersmanagement Prohlis as part of the Science Year 2024 - Freedom on June 15 in Dresden's Prohlis district. From the faculty Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann contributed to the format.

The application period for the scholarship year 2024/25 starts on 01.07.2024! For two weeks (until midnight on July 15), all enrolled students at TU Dresden and all first-year students can apply for a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship.

StuFoExpo 2024: Creative Minds – Ethical Research!

At the Student Research Expo on November 7, 2024, students from all faculties can present their final theses, seminar papers or other research projects. The most convincing projects will be selected by the jury and audience and will receive a prize money.
The application deadline is July 19.

As part of the excellence strategy "TUD 2028 - Synergy and beyond", FOSTER - Funds for Student Research was established as one of three programmes to promote research-oriented learning and teaching. FOSTER enables students and lecturers to apply for funding to support student research. The 2024 call for proposals is now online.

International excite Summer School "Patents in Search of News Business"

TU Dresden is one of the most patent-rich universities in Europe. As part of the international excite Summer School, which will take place from August 25 to 31, 2024, TU Dresden will make selected patents available together with our inventors to make it easier for enthusiastic innovators and potential founders to take the step into a start-up or into cooperation with established companies.

ifo Dresden Workshop on Labor Economics and Social Policy

The 13th Workshop on Labor Economics and Social Policy took place at the Dresden branch of the ifo Institute on May 16 & 17, 2024. Doctoral candidates and postdocs from across Europe presented their research projects in the fields of labour, family and health economics. Katharina Wrohlich (University of Potsdam and DIW Berlin) gave the keynote speech.

Energy and sustainability workshop at TU Dresden

The workshop on "Energy and Sustainability at TU Dresden" took place on May 30, 2024 with the aim of advancing the linking of the energy research strategy with the sustainability strategy and the future development of an "Energy Systems" area of potential. The Chair of Business Administration, esp. Energy Economics, was also present at the workshop with Prof. Dr. Möst, Dr. Hobbie and Dr. Happach as participants and contributed specialist input at the themed tables.
