Dr. Cosper, what motivated you to become involved in the Postdoc Council?
I have always worked on commissions, even as a doctoral candidate. When I came to Dresden, I wanted to continue to advocate for postdocs. The GA and Postdoc Centers already do so much for postdocs, and I find that I can contribute best when I work with the Postdoc Council.
Together, we can represent the opinions of other postdocs for further education and training, representation, to answer or clarify questions or ambiguities, and much more.
How do you promote networking between Postdocs in Dresden?
The Postdoc Representation tries to bring together Postdocs from TU Dresden and HZDR. We meet every last Monday of the month to get to know each other, exchange ideas, ask questions, share our opinions, or meet new and old friends. We also represent the position of Postdocs in other commissions at the university and in Dresden-concept.
We also support the GA in organizing and planning the Postdoc Day and in other capacities. As we all want to improve, the Postdoc Council also wants to improve. We have created a group of other Postdoc Representatives from different universities in Germany, where we can also discuss with other representatives how we can best represent, promote, and support postdocs.
Do you have any advice for "new" Postdocs?
My advice is straightforward: we can only know and achieve so much on our own. But together, we are much stronger and wiser and can accomplish any goal. Always ask questions, stay curious, look for answers, and share knowledge with others. As postdocs, we are still growing and learning.
Having a community is very nice—for the good things and also for the bad. Struggling through academia alone is very difficult, so let's try it together and support each other!
