UN Day 2024 - Prospects for Growth

Celebration of United Nations Day (UN Day) 2024 with the presentation of the “Local Agenda Dresden Award 2024” on October 29, 2024.

Nowadays, many people are asking themselves how growth can be measured in order to be able to map and evaluate aspects such as the circular economy, ecological diversity and social justice in addition to the classic indicator of gross domestic product, so that our society can enjoy a sustainable existence on a social foundation and within planetary boundaries in the long term.

In 2015, the member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, UN Day will focus specifically on SDG 8 "Decent Work and Economic Growth" and SDG 17 "Partnerships for the Goals", specifically "Measuring progress towards sustainable development that complements gross domestic product".

In this regard, we are pleased that Prof. Edeltraud Günther (Director UNU-FLORES) will report on the United Nations Summit of the Future specifically on the Beyond-GDP initiative. There will also be a video message from the economic expert Prof. Ulrike Malmendier and a welcome address from Jan Pratzka, Alderman for Economic Affairs, Digital Affairs, Human Resources and Security of the state capital Dresden.

The impulses will then be taken up in a panel discussion, followed by the 25th Local Agenda Award Ceremony in the second part of the event.

Grand Finale of the Priority Program 2005 - “Opus Fluidum Futurum”

Scientists from all over the world came together at TU Dresden from 03-04/06/2024 for a final conference of the DFG-funded Priority Program 2005 - “Opus Fluidum Futurum” to mark the end of the program. Over the past six years, research activities have focused on rheology-based methodes in the processing of cement-bound building materials, such as the deformation and flow processes in the processing of fresh concrete.

Safety in highly automated driving: Dresden Automotive Symposium 2024

The Chair of Automotive Engineering invites interested specialists and managers to take part in the expert forum. In addition to specialist presentations, the highlight of the conference is the first presentation of the immersive driving simulator Dresden Driving Simulator (DDS) from TU Dresden.

TU Dresden as guest of the Federal President at the “Environment Week”

Information on environmental and sustainability-related activities in teaching, research and transfer, such as the CIPSEM continuing education program, could be found at the TU Dresden stand. In addition, its sustainability strategy, study programs in the field of environment and sustainability and international cooperation within the framework of the “Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre - ABCD-Centre” and with UNU-FLORES were also presented to the interested public.

Chair of Automobile Engineering at the 24th Saxon Road Safety Day

As part of the 24th Saxon Road Safety Day on August 11, 2024, Prof. Günther Prokop presented current traffic research on safe mobility together with Rajagopalan Kannan and Enrico Just as representatives of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences. They also used this opportunity to provide information about the mFUND-funded project SivaS, the Smart Mobility Lab and the Dresden Driving Simulator.

Kick-off conference of the “U_CAN” climate project of WISSENSARCHITEKTUR

The “U_CAN” project, which is funded by the “Horizon Europe” program with a total of 5 million euros, aims to support Ukraine in developing the country in a climate-neutral and sustainable manner by 2050 in line with the European Green Deal.

To this end, WISSENSARCHITEKTUR - Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture (TU Dresden) has agreed to cooperate with eight Ukrainian cities and networked with specialist institutes, universities, NGOs and EU mission cities.

Kickoff for the Smart Mobility Lab at TU Dresden

The Dresden University of Technology celebrated the kick-off of the Smart Mobility Lab (SML) on August 28, 2024. The future main users of the TUD research campus being built in Schwarzkollm, a district of Hoyerswerda, presented themselves on the current test site of the Dresden Driving Simulator, which will be operated as the largest driving simulator in the world in the Smart Mobility Lab.

EUTOPIA Young Leaders Academy selects Fellow from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences

The EUTOPIA Young Leaders Academy supports talented (early career) researchers in their career development and networking. The Rectorate has now appointed Dr.-Ing. Marta Markiewicz as one of the two TU Dresden Fellows for what is now the third cohort. She will be an ambassador for the EUTOPIA Alliance for a period of two years from November 2024.

Order of Merit of the Free State of Saxony goes to Professor Andreas Roloff

On July 23, 2024, Minister President Michael Kretschmer presented the Saxon Order of Merit, an award in recognition of outstanding services to the Free State of Saxony, to Prof. Dr. Andreas Roloff, long-time Director of the Institute of Forest Botany and Forest Zoology at TU Dresden.

He has rendered outstanding services to educational work and the Forest Botanical Garden in Tharandt.

Johann Andreas Schubert Prize 2024 for diploma thesis at the Chair of Combustion Engineering and Drive Technology

Florian Gutzeit receives the Johann Andreas Schubert Prize 2024 for his diploma thesis on “Cold starting with e-fuel methanol” at the Chair of Combustion Engineering and Drive Technology. In it, he investigated the problematic cold start behavior of methanol engines with the help of a specially developed engine sequence control and application.

The SET4FUTURE Innovation Award honors innovative products and technologies in the field of railroad operations. Dresden University of Technology is one of the three key partners of the SET4FUTURE innovation cluster. Dr. Michael Krieg, Managing Director of the Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences “Friedrich List”, took part in the award ceremony on June 6, 2024. He was the laudator for the third-placed project “Railway infrastructure planning with the 360° multi-sensor platform” by DB Bahnbau Group and DB Engineering & Consulting.

Prof. Remmer Sassen is a member of the Leopoldina working group for research into human-earth system interactions

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina e.V. recently appointed Prof. Remmer Sassen as a member of the working group “Exploring and shaping interactions between humans and the Earth system - strategies for transdisciplinary research, teaching and communication”.

He will be actively involved in the creation of a future report, which will provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state of research and educational strategies in Germany.

Overhead line technology as a building block for the transport transition: Researchers give recommendations for action

The eHighway Schleswig-Holstein (FESH) field trial is investigating the use of overhead line trucks in real-life operation on the A1 federal highway. The Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences is involved in the joint project as a research partner with three professorships. The current funding period ends in 2024. In a white paper, the stakeholders involved now state an urgent need for action to continue the technology funding and appeal to political decision-makers.

Climate adaptation and water security: TU Dresden and UFZ participate in international research project

Researchers from TU Dresden and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig (UFZ) are participating in the international research project “Climate Collaboratorium: Joint Development of Applied Theater Decision Labs for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Research”, led by Canadian scientists Prof. Lori Bradford and Prof. Graham Strickert from the University of Saskatchewan.

U_CODE is now called Scenerii: the award-winning co-design tool U_CODE has been further developed and expanded into a start-up by the TUD-WISSENSARCHITEKTUR team thanks to start-up funding from the Exist research transfer program.

This makes it easier than ever for local authorities to find out about citizens' wishes and opinions on urban development.

Opening event of the first Indo-German Joint Master Program “Water Security and Global Change” of the ABCD-Centre

The first cohort of the new Master's degree program in Water Security and Global Change, developed by the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre - Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai, Dresden (ABCD-Centre), was welcomed to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) at an opening ceremony on August 13, 2024.

This represents another important step in international cooperation towards transformative education for sustainable development.

High-level Pakistani delegation visits TU Dresden for insights into the textile sector

The Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) at Technische Universität Dresden welcomed a high-level delegation from Pakistan. The visit is a key component of the eight-year EU-funded project “Implementation of International Labor and Environmental Standards in Pakistan's SMEs (ILES)”, which aims to implement environmental standards in Pakistan's textile sector.

TU Dresden expands technology transfer with India

The first joint workshop “Global Leadership in Intelligent Assistive Technologies” with the IIT Madras Research Park, Indian founders and Dresden-based companies offered participants the opportunity to explore future collaborations from August 12 - 14, 2024. The workshop was attended by 30 Indian entrepreneurs, including 14 start-ups.
