Dear alumni

Before the semester starts again in a few weeks, we would like to use the quiet days to present you with news and interesting facts from your alma mater. Above all, however, we would like to cordially invite you to this year's Alumni Day weekend on 15 and 16 November. Take the opportunity to explore your former faculty and take part in lectures and guided tours. You will also have the opportunity to discover our Knowledge Museum in the Forum Wissen on exclusive guided tours and gain exciting insights into current doctoral research at our university as part of the Three Minute Thesis Competition. In the evening, we will welcome you to the Aula for an annual retrospective of the university, after which you will once again have the opportunity to attend the alumni dinner and party in the Alte Mensa.
Take the opportunity to get in touch with your former fellow students and arrange to meet up. Our alumni team will be happy to help you organise alumni group meetings.

We would also like to draw your attention to the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship. Since 2011, your generous donations have helped to support over 2,000 committed and talented students through the Deutschlandstipendium. Now we invite you to become part of our new Matching Challenge 2024! We want to raise at least 5,400 euros by 10 October 2024. With the support of Certis Belchim and Dr Georg Greitemann from the law firm POELLATH, every euro donated will be doubled, and the federal government will match it! This means that your donation will be quadrupled, so that together we can raise up to 21,600 euros. This sum enables us to support 6 students for a year with 300 euros a month each.

Simply travelling really far. That was the dream of Göttingen students Antonia Staacke and Laura Möller. From the southern tip of the American double continent to Alaska, they travelled 24,000 kilometres and, with accident-related interruptions, for more than one year. They linked their personal challenge with a good cause, a fundraising campaign for bicycles for people in rural areas of the world to increase mobility of disadvantaged people. Our alumni team interviewed them after their return to Göttingen.

Gaining exciting insights into the world of science, experiencing research ‘live’, carrying out experiments together with other children under expert guidance or working on scientific topics: For 20 years, the University of Göttingen's Children's University has been giving third to sixth grade students their first insights into the exciting world of science.
In the coming winter semester, the Children's University is offering a varied anniversary programme with prominent figures to mark its 20th anniversary.

Checking whether an avocado is hard or soft by looking at it? This would require recognizing how the plant cells behave behind the skin. The same applies to all other cells on our planet: Despite more than 100 years of intensive research, many of their properties remain hidden inside the cell. Researchers at the University of Göttingen discovered a new approach that can determine the particularly difficult-to-detect mechanical properties of the cell interior by taking a closer look.

Those who remember visits to the Deutsches Theater usually go into raptures. With its mixture of historical and modern ambience, the theatre offers space for a variety of productions - from classics and premieres to musical shows. However, the theatre has long since become a pressing case for renovation, the costs of which are estimated at 178 million euros. Sandra Hinz, Administrative Director of the DT, provides insights into the current debate.
