Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann

An important component of a functioning democracy is the interplay of civic engagement in various areas of community life. For this reason, CulTUre spoke to Prof. Christian Leßmann about his voluntary work with the “Leselernhelfer” (reading helpers) for the current issue.

Responsibility Weeks 2024

Once again this year, a large number of events are taking place in the University Culture in November. They can be accommodated under the theme of responsibility - these are the Weeks of Responsibility. They begin with the Diversity Days and the Public Climate School, and combine events as part of the Science Year 2024 - Freedom and events relating to the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. However, many other events and formats on the topics of diversity, sustainability, democracy, anti-discrimination and health can be found under that label. One particular highlight is a discussion with Holocaust survivor Renate Aris.

TUD now has a Retreat

Since May 2024, TU Dresden has provided a place of tranquility for everyone on campus to retreat to from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you want to pause, recharge your batteries, meditate or pray: University members can leave their offices, laboratories and lecture halls behind them for a moment of inner contemplation in complete silence.

Climate Challenge - Seminar for community-based climate protection

Climate Challenge is an educational program that empowers its participants to work effectively and independently to ensure lasting climate protection in their communities. To this end, this course encourages participants to make both individual changes (reducing their own carbon footprint) as well as to take politically and socially effective actions. In three sessions (October 22, November 26 and February 4, each from 2:50 to 6:00 p.m.), the aim is to implement a project in your own community, chosen by the participants themselves with the aim of bringing about long-term change.

Education for sustainable development as a route to societal transformation?

On November 6, 2024 between 9:30 am and 4:00 pm, teachers and stakeholders from civil society will come together in discussion. In addition to a critical look at education for sustainable development, there will be a discussion of how North-South perspectives can be integrated into it. Finally, this training program is designed to get participants talking about their own programs and networking. The event is jointly organized by TUD’s Green Office and the Sächsische Entwicklungspolitische Bildungstage (SEBIT), with support from TU Dresden’s Chair of Geographic Education and arche noVa e.V.

Diversity in focus: New certificate program at the Center for Continuing Education

The new certificate program “Diversity in focus” is launching at TUD. All staff of TUD are welcome to participate in the program, the aim of which is to delve deeper into what the general term “Diversity” means on a practical level. The program equips participants with tools to identify biases, challenge structural disadvantages, and promote respectful communication. In workshops, e-learning courses and reflective discussions, participants are supported in creating networks for mutual development.

How do parents divide their unpaid care and paid work?

Before starting a family, many couples want to share the responsibility of care work. Couples have to work out what this means for their families, as there is no one-size-fits-all solution for balancing family and career. Participants are invited to join in the discussion at the lecture and workshop.

35 years on - Will the wall remain in people's minds? Panel discussion and poetry slam in the Year of Science

November 2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But people still speak of East and West Germany, of the failure of the East to catch up with the West – in economic and political terms, as well as regarding mentality and identity. Are East and West German still valid categories at all, and if so, what do they look like? How desirable is an assimilation? Which expectations have been fulfilled, which have been disappointed? This multifaceted topic will be approached in a scientific and artistic manner.

Perfectly fair! Christmas wishes for everyone – The kids' question show with Julian Janssen

Actually, what is fair? The answer seems simple: Always treat everyone the same! But how can that be done? Not all children have the same opportunities. There are poor countries and rich countries – is that fair? And why are adults allowed to make so many decisions that determine the future lives of their children? The more you think about it, the trickier it gets.
That's why the question show gives children the opportunity to ask author Assata Frauhammer and TUD scientists their questions about justice, fairness and freedom with Julian Janssen (known from public children's television as “Checker Julian”). The event will take place on December 2, 2024 in the Kulturpalast as part of the Science Year 2024 - Freedom.
