UN Day 2024 - Prospects for Growth

TU Dresden celebrated United Nations Day and discussed "Prospects for Growth"

On October 29, institutions, initiatives and interested citizens from Dresden's civil society gathered at the city hall for the United Nations Day (UN Day) 2024 celebrations and the awarding of the “Local Agenda Dresden Prize 2024”.

With the panel discussion and the impulses, the UN Day 2024 helped to ensure that important questions in connection with the topic of “Prospects for Growth” were also considered from a local perspective and reflected in an international context. The participants received many thought-provoking impulses that stimulated further discussions, also in private. However, it also became clear that there are multiple approaches to shedding new light on the measurability of growth and the metrics of welfare, but that these approaches also have their limitations and that we are still a long way from reaching a consensus on their use.

Farewell Lecture Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Manfred Curbach

Farewell lecture by Manfred Curbach: “It's the impact, ...”

In an emotional yet humorous farewell lecture, Manfred Curbach reflected on his impressive career and developments in civil engineering over the last few decades. Although his farewell lecture marked the end of his academic career, Manfred Curbach will probably continue to work on the important issues of our time as part of the pioneering large-scale research project “LAB - Living Art of Building”.

Climate Change Campaign Day in the Grosser Garten: Multi-talented soil

The “multi-talented soil” can also be described as a “helper in climate change”, as its diverse ecosystem services and functions help us to meet the challenges of climate change. With this in mind, a day of action with lectures, guided tours and exciting hands-on activities took place on September 28, 2024, with TU Dresden as a partner.

The German Government and the Free State of Saxony confirm the basic funding for UNU-FLORES in Dresden

Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of Dresden University of Technology, comments on the agreement on the continued basic funding of UNU-FLORES as follows:

“The extension of the funding is a significant vote of confidence in the scientific excellence and international appeal of TU Dresden. The partnership with UNU-FLORES and thus the connection to the United Nations system is not only a source of relevant stimuli, but also a catalyst for effective knowledge transfer at the interface between society and politics.”

TU Dresden researchers develop an app for simulating heavy rainfall events

Extreme weather events pose major challenges for cities and municipalities. In Dresden, the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics (IWD) is developing an "Urban Digital Heavy Rain Twin" for the Saxon state capital. In future, users will be able to use the app to simulate heavy rainfall events, obtain information on hazard situations and prepare protective measures on this basis. The “Environmental monitoring/digital heavy rain twin” project is a continuation of the BMU-funded WAWUR project (wild draining water in urban areas).

Damiano Cacace is the Alumnus of the month November 2024.

Alumnus of the month November 2024

Damiano Cacace was looking for a university with an excellent reputation and a city with a high quality of life for his Master's degree. Dresden offered him both. In 2010, he began his Master's degree in Hydro Science and Engineering (HSE) at TU Dresden. He has remained true to the subject of water. Today, as group leader of the DREWAG drinking water laboratory, he monitors the quality of Dresden's drinking water.
