Welcome
to "Impressions of University Culture"!

The year 2024, which was also our Year of Science on the topic of “Freedom”, is drawing to a close. This year, the TUD has dedicated itself to various formats that shed light on the freedom of our democracy. In this issue, we offer you - in addition to an initial look ahead to 2025 - a review of the past months, which focused entirely on social cohesion, justice and democracy. I would like to thank you all very much for being part of this agenda!

I would now like to take this opportunity to wish all readers a relaxing holiday season and a wonderful end to the year. Have a good start to the new year!

I hope you enjoy reading this issue!

We look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions for topics at:

Vice-Rector for University Culture reads to the SpielWerk daycare center

Professor Roswitha Böhm had an extraordinary goal on November 15, 2024: she brought a special children's book with her to read to the children at the SpielWerk student daycare center: “Astrid Lindgren erzählt”. It was special because it had already been reading material in her childhood and she had also regularly read it to her own children. The nursery children listened attentively to the stories of the Swedish children's author and enjoyed the new reading voice in their facility. The nationwide Reading Aloud Day is an initiative of the Reading Foundation, ZEIT and the Deutsche Bahn Foundation with the support of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Homeland.

Making women in science more visible!

Next year, TUD's Diversity Management program will continue to celebrate pioneering women in science with the HERStory calendar. The calendar presents 12 outstanding women professors and their biographies. The focus is consistently on the present, showcasing professors who, for example, were the first women to hold a professorship in their field of research at TUD. The calendar can now be ordered free of charge or obtained directly from Diversity Management.

//DataSpaces: CIDS exhibition showcases TUD's research on digitalization

Digital transformation is changing our society in many ways. It makes our daily lives easier with smart technologies, improves access to information and promotes global networking. At the same time, however, it poses security and manipulation risks.
Research on artificial intelligence (AI) not only accelerates processes in science, but also societal developments. CIDS is dedicated to research in the field of digitalization. The newly opened exhibition “//DataSpaces. Experiencing Science” uses interactive modules and historical computing technology to provide insights into these complex topics. The exhibition is funded by TUD in Dialogue.

“Cottbus Listens, Cottbus Tells” – Opening of an exhibition focusing on the history of migration in Cottbus

The exhibition “Cottbus Listens, Cottbus Tells” was created as part of the citizen science project “Migration in East Germany: Your story told in your own words.” It will open at Stadtmuseum Cottbus on December 7. The exhibition, developed in collaboration with the Geflüchtetennetzwerk Cottbus refugee network and Stadtmuseum Cottbus, puts migrant perspectives at the center of Cottbus’ history. This enables a collection to emerge that, on the one hand, highlights aspects of migration history present in the permanent exhibition and, on the other, tells the life stories of migrants through memorabilia. The exhibition is funded by TUD in Dialogue.

Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony 2026:
“Jewish - Saxon - Mentshlich”

The Free State of Saxony is celebrating a state-wide “Year of Jewish Culture” in 2026 under the auspices of the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism (SMWKT) and the State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz (smac).
Under the title “Tacheles” and the motto “Jüdisch - Sächsisch - Mentshlich” (Jewish - Saxon - Mentshlich), the Jewish culture and history of the state, as well as irretrievable losses, will be made visible for a whole year with various activities. The universities are also to be involved. It is conceivable, for example, to expand the range of courses with events with a regional focus (Judaism in Saxony, traces of local Jewish life, etc.). A funding program has also been announced.

Sound & Science 2025: Oxytocin

The Dresden Music Festival 2025 has a great motto: LOVE. From 17.05. to 14.06.2025, artistic director Jan Vogler will bring world-class orchestras and innovative projects to Dresden to bring the most beautiful facets of this feeling to life. The Sound & Science series on 27.05.2025 at the CRTD will make a special contribution: an evening that combines science and music.
A song begins, and suddenly music comes to life, permeating the body. And then, in the midst of these sounds, connections are made - without words, just through the sound of the moment. The focus is on the “cuddle hormone” oxytocin, which gives us a feeling of closeness and trust when we hug, kiss or make music together.
TUD scientists Prof. Dr. Clemens Kirschbaum and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Hoyer will take us on a journey through the secrets of biology and psychology. The evening will be accompanied by musicians who will open the soul and touch the senses with moving sounds.

Protect your skin in winter

Cold temperatures outside and dry, heated air inside make it difficult for your skin to retain moisture and can lead to allergies or skin conditions such as of eczema. Staff who are frequently exposed to liquid at work - e.g. who have to wash their hands frequently or wear protective gloves - will receive a skin protection plan and skincare products from their employer. TUD's Occupational Health Services support the organizational units in an advisory capacity in creating these skin protection plans and in choosing skincare products, while supporting the staff in any matters of occupational healthcare.
