Tanja Endrass, Professor of Addiction Research and Dean of the Faculty of Psychology, was re-elected Deputy Chairperson of the School of Science by the School Committee on January 22, 2025. She was appointed to the first position in the order of the two deputies by the Chairman Prof. Carsten Timm.

Metal-free magnetism: Reinhart Koselleck grant for Thomas Heine

Thomas Heine, Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at TU Dresden, has received prestigious Reinhart Koselleck funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for research into robust metal-free magnetic materials. With a total of 915,000 euros, Heine will receive sufficient funding over the next five years to use this innovative project at TU Dresden to provide impetus for the electronics of the future, particularly for quantum computers.

Dr. Mareike Albert Appointed Professor of Epigenomics of Neural Development

Dr. Mareike Albert, a research group leader at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD), has been appointed as a Professor of Epigenomics of Neural Development at Faculty of Biology. Her research focuses on understanding the evolution of the human brain.

New research network for bioelectronics in Saxony

The research network “BiotroNiS” will create a new cooperation platform for bioelectronic materials and systems over the next three years. The project, with a total volume of 3.6 million euros, is being funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Bioelectronics, the combination of living organisms and electronic systems, is a future technology with promising applications in medicine and biotechnology. The BiotroNiS project is establishing a new research network to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation in this field in Saxony. To this end, information and cooperation formats are being created to drive forward the development of bioelectronic materials and systems and facilitate their implementation in applications. BiotroNiS will help to pool and expand specific expertise and identify topics with disruptive potential. The initiators of the network , which already has nine partners, are Karl Leo, Professor of Optoelectronics at Dresden University of Technology and Director of the Dresden Integrated Center for Applied Physics and Photonic Materials (IAPP), Kathrin Harre, Professor of Technical Chemistry at the Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTWD) and Project Manager at the Center for Applied Research and Technology (ZAFT), and Carsten Werner, Director of the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF, coordination).

Dr Dorothea Golze receives ERC Starting Grant

Dr Dorothea Golze, research group leader at the Chair of Theoretical Chemistry, has won the competition for European research funding and has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant worth 1.49 million euros. The prestigious award will enable the chemist to expand her research into photoinduced processes at material interfaces over the next five years and advance her six-person research group.

2D precision membranes for higher energy efficiency in separation processes: research consortium receives renowned ERC Synergy Grant

Pushing the boundaries of current device performance through revolutionary separation technology - this is the overarching goal of the ‘2DPolyMembrane’ research project on which Thomas Heine from TU Dresden, Xinliang Feng from MPI Halle and Grégory Schneider from Leiden University, Netherlands, will be working together over the next six years. Ultra-thin 2D polymer heterostructure membranes (2DHMs) should make this possible. This ambitious, interdisciplinary project is being funded with a prestigious Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) endowed with 10 million euros.

Focus on sustainable metal extraction: TANIOBIS doctoral award for Dr. Janine Richter

Dr. Janine Richter was awarded this year's prestigious TANIOBIS doctoral prize by the Solid State Chemistry and Materials Research Section of the German Chemical Society (GDCh). The prize, endowed with 5000 euros, is donated by TANIOBIS GmbH and honors outstanding dissertations in the field of inorganic solid-state chemistry and materials research.

Two Exceptional Young Physicists Honoured with the Dresdner Promotionspreis Physik 2024

Dr. Benedikt Placke and Dr. Lukas Körber were awarded the Dresdner Promotionspreis Physik for their outstanding dissertations at the Colloquium of the Faculty of Physics on 3 December 2024. From a total of seven outstanding nominations, the two award winners stood out for their particularly excellent scientific achievements. The Dresdner Promotionspreis Physik is endowed with a total of 4,000 euros and was donated by the Wilhelm and Else Hereaus Foundation.

Best Paper Award for Prof Martin Keller-Ressel and Felix Sachse

Prof. Martin Keller-Ressel and Felix Sachse from the Institute of Mathematical Stochastics at TU Dresden were awarded the 2023 IJTAF Best Paper Award by the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance. They received the award, entailing a cash prize of USD 1,000, for their paper "State Space Decomposition and Classification of Term Structure Shapes in the Two-Factor Vasicek Model". The IJTAF Editorial Board recognized the publication  “for extremely interesting results in the framework of the two-factor Vasicek model using the concept of envelopes of curves and their associated winding number, which help to address several questions of practical interest related to the shape of the corresponding yield curves”.

Inspired by nature: Leaftronics pave way for biodegradable electronics

A research team headed by Prof. Karl Leo have developed an innovative, nature-inspired solution that could revolutionize the electronics industry: “Leaftronics”. This innovative approach leverages the natural structure of leaves to create biodegradable electronic substrates with enhanced properties and offers a sustainable, efficient, and scalable solution to the globale-waste problem. These findings have now been published in the journal ‘Science Advances’.

Leaftronics reloaded: Leaf-inspired solution for sustainable water treatment

In collaboration with the Romanian National Research and Development Institute for Industrial Ecology (ECOIND), the Leaftronics team has developed another revolutionary application for its recently presented technology. As the researchers report in the renowned specialist journal “NJP Flexible Electronics”, they also want to use the nature-inspired “Leaftronics” design for an innovative and ecological form of water treatment. To do this, they are using a unique metallization process.

Magnetism without metal: a milestone for materials science

Dr Hongde Yu and Prof Thomas Heine have succeeded for the first time in predicting metal-free organic magnetic materials using precise computer simulations. These magnetic two-dimensional (2D) polymers could play an important role in data storage, medical technology or quantum computing in the future. Their discovery was recently published in the renowned journal “Science Advances”.

Breakthrough in hydrogen research: More efficient isotope separation in sight

The lightest of all elements, hydrogen, is in great demand due to its promising role as a sustainable resource in the energy transition. A team from Leipzig University and TU Dresden, as part of the Hydrogen Isotopes 1,2,3H Research Training Group, has made an important breakthrough in the efficient and cost-effective provision of isotopes. These are the three forms in which hydrogen occurs in nature – as protium, deuterium or tritium. The international team of researchers has taken a big step towards realising its dream of separating hydrogen isotopes at room temperature at low cost. The team’s findings have just been published in the flagship journal Chemical Science.

Visiting the Professor- innovative research in the botanic garden with a turkish guest scientist

With the start of the (pre-)Christmas season, we welcome Sena Seçil Akpinarli from Hacettepe University (Ankara, Turkey) to the Biology Education team. During her six-month research stay (funded by the 2214-A programme of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye), we will jointly develop and evaluate innovative teaching methods for teacher training in the digitally supported teaching of species identification in the Botanical Garden of the TU Dresden.

Dr. Peiyun Li, a top researcher from Peking University, has joined the Institute of Applied Physics at TU Dresden as a Maria Reiche Fellow. The Chinese material scientist is recognized for pioneering work in n-type organic electrochemical transistor materials for bioelectronics.

The fellowship stay of Prof. Plass serves the joint research on the development of advanced learning technologies. During his stay, Prof. Plass, Prof. Narciss and members of the Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI) will work on immersive formative feedback strategies for augmented reality and virtual reality learning environments, among other things. In addition, Prof. Plass, together with Prof. Köhler from the Center for Open Digital Innovation and Participation (CODIP), will analyze the benefits and conditions of learning scenarios with modern learning technologies. The overarching goal of Prof. Plass' visits is to establish research collaborations with Prof. Narciss and Prof. Köhler in the areas of design and research of innovative advanced learning technologies. These research collaborations will be the first steps towards establishing an institutional partnership between TU Dresden and New York City University in the field of innovative learning sciences. In addition, Prof. Plass will be involved in teaching at the postgraduate level.

These can be tailored to the respective application so that they work more efficiently and are biodegradable. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Sanati is also involved in teaching. Furthermore, a joint DFG proposal will be completed during the fellowship stay.

Dr. León holds a position as Assistant Professor at the Physics Faculty at the University of Chile, Santiago, Chile. She received her PhD in Physics at the Federico Santa María Technical University, Vaparaíso, Chile. At TU Dresden, Dr. León will conduct research materials with unique superconducting phenomena. Specifically, she will study the electronic and mechanical properties of Ce,La(RhAs)2 compounds under pressure and strain using ab-initio calculations and theoretical models. This topic is part of the research interests of Prof. Hassinger's group, which conducts experimental research to explore new quantum phases of matter at low temperatures. It will serve as the starting point for a continuation of collaboration, in which Prof. Hassinger will contribute theoretical calculations.

During the fellowship at TU Dresden, Dr. Chandran is conducting a research project on infrared photodiodes. Non-invasive near-infrared imaging is essential, particularly in healthcare, pharmaceutical, and surveillance industries, and has primarily relied on photodetectors based on inorganic semiconductors. These detectors are manufactured in complex and expensive processes and require strict hardware requirements, such as expensive megapixel cameras. The research project will therefore develop, and test photodetectors based on organic materials, which are associated with lower costs and high performance. Dr. Chandran will also be involved in teaching. A series of seminars is planned to discuss the basic principles of detectors and specific applications. Application examples of photodetectors will also be demonstrated at events for the "Long Night of Science" and in lectures for students.

And in his opinion, this is neither better nor worse than premium salts. “As a food chemist, it always really annoys me - I'm allowed to say that - when table salt, i.e. sodium chloride in chemical terms, is always classified as unhealthy or even poisonous from the outset.”

Why do physiological times differ depending on the species? | Introducing Miki Ebisuya

Different animal species have different physiological times and forms of development. For example, the human gestation period is about 9 months, while it is only 20 days in mice and almost 1.5 years in rhinoceroses. Biologists and biophysicists are asking themselves the fundamental question of how organisms achieve the time and form inherent in these species, but the mechanism is still largely unknown.

Exhibition “RETHINKING PHYSICS. 100 years of quantum mechanics: Time for a female perspective!” opened in Dresden

Role models for the next generation of female physicists: To mark the United Nations' International Year of Quantum Science and Technology Quantum2025, the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat of the Universities of Würzburg and Dresden is presenting the exhibition “RETHINKING PHYSICS. 100 years of quantum mechanics: Time for a female perspective!” at the Kulturpalast Dresden. The focus is on portraits of established and aspiring female researchers. They talk about their enthusiasm and fascination for scientific work and show that the history of quantum physics is also being written by women. The exhibition opened in Würzburg at the same time and will go on tour worldwide in 2025.
The traveling exhibition RETHINKING PHYSICS can be seen in the foyer of the Kulturpalast Dresden (Schloßstraße 2, 01067 Dresden) until February 5, 2025. It will also be visiting around 50 locations worldwide in 2025, for example in Australia, Germany, Austria and the USA.

Chemkids experimental competition: Saxony's young chemists honored at TUD

On Saturday, September 7, the award ceremony for the most successful participants in the experimental competition Chemkids in Saxony took place in the Schönfeld lecture hall of the Barkhausen Building at TUD. The first guests had started around 6:00 a.m. in Vogtland and Upper Lusatia. Parents from Leipzig, Chemnitz, Zwickau and Bautzen, as well as from Dresden and the surrounding area, set off with their children in the morning. The lecture hall was well filled with around 250 people at around 10 am.

24th year of Physics on Saturday launched

On November 9th, the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs at TU Dresden opened the 24th season of the Physics on Saturday series, which has been running since the year of Physics 2000 and with which the Faculty of Physics aims to awaken enthusiasm for science and technology among schoolchildren. Over 500 participants from a large number of schools in Saxony made their way to the large physics lecture hall to learn more about enlightening experiments with light and colors in Prof. Pospiech's lecture and a variety of experiments. This year's topics include various areas of modern physics, such as From cyclists, helicopters and MRI: From the world of angular momentum on November 16, With superconductivity to the hoverboard on November 23, A fantasy journey into the quantum world of the electron on November 30 and a Look into the fascinating world of atoms at the end on December 7.
