Welcome
to "Impressions of University Culture"!

Our first issue in 2025 is dedicated to the debate on February 13, 1945 in Dresden. Special attention is paid to the interactive “Forum 13th February transnational”, which we present in detail in an interview. In addition, an essay sheds light on the historical dimensions of this commemoration.

Beyond this, we have once again compiled exciting projects and events in University Culture for you.

I wish you an enjoyable read!

We look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions for topics at:

Recommendations for Coping with Death and Grief published

Dealing with death and grief at work or at university requires particular sensitivity and empathy. This is a challenging time, especially for those who are directly affected by a loss, but also for the entire team and the institution. The Department of University Culture has now published a guide on how to deal with this situation. The guide contains helpful information and contacts within and outside the university.

Shaping change and promoting “education for sustainable development“

Overcoming current global challenges requires transformative approaches in higher education. If you would like to learn more about the concept of “education for sustainable development” and gain first-hand insights into how two universities are implementing it, there are two events for you to join:
On February 18, 2025, Dr. Stefan Siegel from the University of St. Gallen will give an online lecture on “Evidence-informed education for sustainability: debunking myths | promoting skills | shaping change.” He will present hands-on approaches to support lecturers and other university staff in actively shaping change. On March 3, 2025 Jennifer Krah from the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development will hold a workshop explaining what the key skills for sustainable development are, how they can be fostered in teaching, and how they can be anchored in curricula.

Successful review of TUD's environmental management system

The aim of TUD's EMAS environmental management system is to continuously improve the university's environmental performance. It was introduced in 2003 and was revalidated at the end of 2024. External auditors spent three days on site in meetings and discussions at various TUD locations. The environmental management system was once again reviewed successfully, so that TUD will continue to be an EMAS-certified university for the next three years.

Team up to make a difference in just a few hourss

Each organizational unit is entitled to one day per calendar year for team-building activities. Last year, TUD teams used this day to volunteer for a good cause. The teams helped renovate a neighborhood center, supported work on a children's and youth farm, pitched in on nature conservation projects, or collected garbage. If your team would like to join a volunteer project on the project day, feel free to contact the Directorate University Culture. During their project day in 2024, the team from the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research (ZLSB) collected discarded cigarette butts in Dresden's city center.
