A network of three new supercomputers for research inaugurated

At the end of April, the TUD's Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) inaugurated the highly specialized new supercomputing system "Barnard" as well as the first components of the computer architecture "SpiNNaker2" with a ceremony. At the same time, the procurement of a further computing cluster, "Capella", was also presented. As a complete system, the trio addresses the requirements for high computing power in close connection with large amounts of data as well as special solutions for the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, thus meeting the current needs of research. As a key technology for innovative developments in a variety of scientific fields, the systems within the NHR network (National High Performance Computing) offer excellent conditions for breaking new ground competitively and implementing fast solutions for artificial intelligence.

bits, bonding, bassline - first electronic music festival on June 7 at Stromwerk Dresden

VDE (Verband der Elektrotechnik Elektronik und Informationstechnik e.V.) and the TUD are jointly organizing the Festival of Electronics at Stromwerk Dresden, the central event location, on June 7, 2024. bits, bonding, bassline is the first German business festival for electronics and computer science, and certainly one of the largest and most unique music events between the two worlds of young professionals and industry. This platform brings together students from different semesters as well as experts and executives from science, research and industry from all over Germany to share their interest in music and careers. Free admission for registered students, doctoral students and friends of electrical engineering as well as other departments, capacity permitting.

Michael Färber appointed Chair for Scalable Software Architectures for Data Analytics

Since April 1, Michael Färber has held the new Chair for Scalable Software Architectures for Data Analytics at the Faculty of Computer Science, which is also a strategic Chair for the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig) and supports the interdisciplinary research of the Competence Center and the TUD. Prof. Michael Färber graduated with distinction in computer science from the University of Ulm in 2011 and completed a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2012. He completed his doctorate in 2017 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology on the topic of "Semantic Search for Novel Information". Färber then spent a year teaching and researching at Kyoto University in Japan as one of only 15 scholarship holders worldwide from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). His research interests focus in particular on natural language processing, machine learning and knowledge representation.

Dresden AI Pioneer Richard Socher Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Dr. Richard Socher received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Computer Science on 26 April 2024 for his outstanding achievements in research and development in the fields of deep learning and natural language processing. Born in Dresden, he is one of the few German-born pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence in Silicon Valley. As CEO of the AI-based search engine "you.com", Socher is a visionary tech entrepreneur and an internationally sought-after AI expert. He was one of the first to conduct research into language processing using neural networks and deep learning. His work laid the foundation for the current AI revolution in large language models.

Prof. Roberto Calandra honored with the IEEE Early Academic Career Award in Robotics and Automation

Roberto Calandra, Chair of Explainable Artificial Intelligence in the Faculty of Computer Science, received the 2024 Early Academic Career Award in Robotics and Automation from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS).The award honors outstanding achievements in the robotics and automation community. Roberto Calandra receives it for his "contributions to touch sensing, processing and its application to manipulation". The award recognizes the work he and his team have done in the field of touch sensing - from hardware design and software development to applications in the field of grasping and manipulation.

We are once again looking for great international projects and initiatives at the TUD as part of the call for entries for the Internationalization Award. The focus of the competition is on committed stakeholders at our university who are committed to cosmopolitanism, a welcoming culture, an international campus and the expansion of innovative international cooperation. The aim of the Internationalization Award is to recognize and make visible the numerous initiatives at the TUD. Applications can be submitted until 30.06.2024.

TU Dresden present themselves at the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok

From June 10 to 13, TUD will have a stand at the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok. In addition to research projects from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Engineering Sciences, the focus will also be on TUD's sustainability efforts in relation to teaching, research and transfer. TUD is also taking part in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings with SGD 9 "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure". In 2023, TUD was ranked 59th worldwide.

TUD Global Citizenship Certificate launched

The TUD Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) is an active contribution of TUD to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 4 "Inclusive, equitable and quality education". The GCC program qualifies, empowers and connects its students and doctoral candidates (including exchange students) with an international and local-global scientific and civil society community. It promotes and recognizes the intercultural, global competencies, experiences and local-global engagement of prospective TUD graduates in the form of a meaningful and future-relevant certificate, issued in the name of the University Executive Board. Information on the strategy process for energy research in the ING School

The School of Engineering Sciences has set itself the goal of contributing to the development of a strategy for energy research at the TUD. In order to achieve this, a new task force was set up by the School Management at the beginning of the year to develop a strategy for energy research in the School. The members of the task force are keen to drive the strategy development process forward by the end of the year and want to involve and take into account as many members of the School as possible. To this end, various activities will be initiated and carried out in which the participation of all ING members is required and you will have the opportunity to contribute your ideas and suggestions for the future development of energy research in the ING field. The task force works on the basis of the previous strategy processes for energy technology research and builds on these. "Interactive soft-stiff composites" – hybrid event
Scientists from Dresden want to research an innovative new class of materials within the RTG 2430, i.e. fiber-reinforced elastomer composites with structurally integrated actuators and sensor networks that can switch between soft and stiff behavior. The developments and results of the RTG doctoral students will be presented together with lectures by international guests during the two-day event. Students are welcome to register, also in view of the upcoming call for proposals for the 3rd project phase!
