TU Dresden aims to expand cutting-edge research and submits six full proposals for Clusters of Excellence

On August 22, 2024, TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD) submitted both the full proposals for the three new Cluster of Excellence initiatives called for in February 2024  and the follow-up proposals for continued funding of the three existing Clusters of Excellence to the German Research Foundation (DFG). TUD is thus entering this decisive phase of the competition for millions in funding from the Federal and State governments for Cluster of Excellence research with a total of six full proposals.

Excellent research and innovative structures: TU Dresden remains Germany's university with the most patents

TU Dresden maintains its top ranking as the university with the most patents in Germany. The Saxon University of Excellence defended its leading position in the current ranking of the German Economic Institute (IW) by a wide margin. The IW analyzed the number of patent applications from 2017 to 2021. TUD has filed more than 280 patents within this period.

Chemist Dr Dorothea Golze receives ERC Starting Grant

Dr Dorothea Golze, research group leader at the Chair of Theoretical Chemistry, has won the competition for European research funding and has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant worth 1.49 million euros. The prestigious award will enable the chemist to expand her research into photoinduced processes at material interfaces over the next five years and advance her six-person research group.

PD Hans Kleemann awarded guest professorship

PD Hans Kleemann from the Institute of Applied Physics has been awarded a guest professorship by the Ecole Polytechnique Paris. Starting October 1, he and his family will spend several guest stays at the Laboratoire de Physique des Interfaces et des Couches Minces (LPICM), where he will work with the scientists there on fundamental questions about phase transitions, their modeling, and their use for asynchronous neural networks. Mr. Kleemann has been working very successfully with the LPICM for several years. The starting point of the collaboration is a successful bilateral ANR-BMBF project, on the basis of which the EIC Pathfinder Open project BAYFLEX was jointly acquired last year. In addition to the scientific exchange on the existing projects and specialist lectures, the guest stay will primarily be used to develop a new project idea for the implementation of stochastic computing.

­Poster prize for lighthouse project International Particle Physics Masterclasses at ICHEP2024 in Prague

The International Particle Physics Masterclasses project has received a poster prize at the renowned International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP2024). The project is coordinated at the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics at TU Dresden and is one of the lighthouses that shine a light on the quality, breadth and diversity of TU Dresden in internationalization. The poster "International Masterclasses in Particle Physics - expanding geographically and broadening in scope" was presented at the conference in Prague by David Borgelt (University of Münster). A total of 180 posters were in competition and seven poster prizes were awarded.

Material science: New understanding of grain boundary kinetics unlocks advanced control of crystal microstructures

An international research team, including Prof. Marco Salvalaglio and doctoral student Maik Punke from the Institute of Scientific Computing, provides new concepts for manipulating polycrystalline materials by shedding new light on fundamental mechanisms of grain boundary motion. They demonstrate that grain boundaries in crystalline materials move like Brownian ratchets, meaning that non-equilibrium perturbations like oscillating stress or temperature can drive their directional motion and thus accelerate microstructure evolution and grain growth. Their findings have now been published in the renowned journal “Science”.

The Hidden Architect: How nuclei organize the eyes and brain

Inside each cell, individual structures known as organelles perform key functions, but how these organelles contribute to the formation of tissues and organs is unknown. Groundbreaking research from the Campàs group at the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life of TU Dresden now reveals that the cell’s nucleus controls the stiffness of eye and brain tissues, and even the ordered arrangements of cells in them. These results add a new role for the cell’s nucleus in tissue organization, well beyond its established role in genetic regulation.

Thalamic Brain Dysfunction in Dyslexia: A Breakthrough in Understanding the Most Common Learning Disorder

A research team headed by neuroscientist Prof. Katharina von Kriegstein confirms that developmental dyslexia is linked to changes in the function and structure of a specific part of the human brain known as the visual thalamus. Their findings belong to the largest and most comprehensive high-resolution MRI study targeting this area. The study has now been published in the journal ‘Brain’.

New research tool: smartphone app analyses vaccination decisions in everyday life

An international research team, including Prof. Dirk Brockmann, Chair Biology of Complex Systems and Director of the Center Synergy of Systems, have developed an innovative and unusual method for analysing vaccination decisions and their effects in real-life situations. The study, which was primarily conducted at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) with the support of top-class scientists from international universities shows how smartphones and a playful approach can be used to gain deeper insights into people's decision-making behaviour with regard to vaccinations.

Risk of heated food often overestimated: Review study finds insufficient evidence of adverse effects on health

The Senate Commission on Food Safety (SKLM) of the German Research Foundation (DFG), of which Prof Michael Hellwig and Prof Thomas Henle from the Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry are members, has conducted a systematic review study to investigate the effects of glycation compounds (also known as AGEs, Advanced Glycation Endproducts) in heated food on human health. The results of this study show that there are no scientifically verifiable links between the intake of glycation products and negative influences on health. The work was recently published in the journal ‘Critical Reviews in Toxicology’.

First "Semiconductor Talent Incubation Program" students return from Taiwan – and the next group is already to go

Less than one year after the signing of the trilateral agreement between the Free State of Saxony, TUD Dresden University of Technology and the semiconductor group, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the first students from Saxon universities have now returned from Taiwan. They completed a six-month study visit, which included a two-month internship in Taiwan as part of the innovative Semiconductor Talent Incubation Program Taiwan (STIPT).

Erasmus+ information event for the submission of applications

The new call for applications under the Erasmus+ program in Key Action 2 is expected in autumn. The focus is on university cooperation with European universities, non-university partners and universities in the EU's neighboring countries, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The cooperations aim to promote education and teaching. An information event will take place on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm at the Graduate Academy (Mommsenstraße 7, 01069 Dresden). Detailed information on Erasmus+ Key Action 2 and the individual funding lines will be presented there. In addition, experience reports from successful project leaders will be presented and initial consultations with EPC staff will be offered. binding registration is required as the number of participants is limited to 36 people. The registration deadline is October 4th, 2024. The event is exclusively for employees of Dresden University of Technology. In case you would like to seek the advice of the Erasmus+ team, please send an email to epc@tu-dresden.de.

The transCampus project call has started!
The aim of this year's call is to support project groups in successfully applying for major third-party funding from national or European funding organisations. In addition to King's College, other international partners are possible and welcome. The funding offers the opportunity for preparatory research work, reciprocal visits and a - compulsory - joint workshop on proposal writing. The deadline for submissions is 15 October. All information on the funding conditions and main topics can be found on the program page.

A heavenly future for astronomy in Saxony

Hardly any other federal state has as many school observatories and planetariums as Saxony. Professional research is carried out at the TU Dresden. And the German Center for Astrophysics is currently being built in Görlitz.

Episode 8: Nutrition and evolution, part 2: Of milk-drinking mutants, vegan dogs and lactose-free Stone Age diets

In part 2 of our podcast on nutrition and evolution, we look specifically at how culture has influenced genes - and not just human genes, but animal genes too. In particular, the sedentarization of humans around 10,000 years ago and the associated cultural changes - away from hunter-gatherers and towards agriculture and animal husbandry - had profound consequences for our diet, which in turn influenced our genes over the following millennia. Presenter Peer Kittel and student Jule Wäntig discuss with food chemist Prof. Thomas Henle from TU Dresden why many people today are milk-drinking mutants and whether we should eat like we did in the Stone Age.

Recommended visit to the CERN Science Gateaway

For 70 years, cutting-edge research has been carried out at the European research centre for particle physics CERN in Geneva. Scientists there use huge accelerators and detectors to research the smallest components of our universe. But CERN has much more to offer and even for the whole family!
The modern CERN Science Gateway is a free exhibition and hands-on centre that invites children and adults to discover particle physics, the quantum world and the universe through interactive formats. From proton football to quantum tennis - here you can experience, marvel at and understand physics up close. Our recommendation: a guided tour of the CERN site, where you can marvel at the first particle accelerator and gain an insight into the control room of the Atlas project, in which particle physicists from TUD are also involved.

Epilogue to the 30th anniversary celebration Faculty of Biology

On August 30, 2024, the Faculty of Biology celebrated its 30th anniversary since its re-founding in 1994. The anniversary symposium was moderated by Dean Prof. Mascher and took place in the ballroom at the IHD (Institute of Wood Technology) with a welcoming address by Rector Prof. Staudinger, followed by a lecture with a review of 30 years of biology by Prof. Gutzeit and subsequent flash talks by our new professors. At the end of the festive event, the new image film of the biologists was presented.  and met with great interest, which is now also available to everyone on the faculty website. The event was funded by the Gesellschaft von Freunden und Förderern der TU Dresden e.V. Thanks to the organizing team Oliver Zierau, Anja Jahn, Katrin Simmank and Manja Häusler and all helping hands.

Project day School of Science - On historical pathways

This year's School's project day, which is traditionally a joint venture between the Dean's offices, the School administration and the Academic Affairs office, took place on 3 September. The group of almost 30 people met at the Palitzsch Museum in Prohlis on this occasion and in midsummer temperatures. After a guided tour of the museum, the group split up to either take part in a guided hike on the Archeo-Path or to carry out excavations at Prohlis Castle. Afterwards, everyone had lunch together with refreshingly cool drinks and were able to talk about what they had experienced. Many thanks to Anne-Marie Saalbach and Sandra Scherber for organising the event.
