Digital and analog exhibition space

DAS BUCHPROJEKT (The Book Project), a participatory and collective alliance of professional artists working in a variety of disciplines, seeks to test out new production formats for bringing into the world bold and thoughtful, funny and political, clever and sad stories for children and the adults around them. The project’s analogue exhibition space is located just across the street from the daadgalerie in the Projektraum für kreative Leseförderung. Beginning there in April is RoomMates, an exhibition series that explores storytelling possibilities in a space that can be accessed both physically and virtually. For the series, raumlabor berlin has designed a place that plays with the dual existence of analog and digital realms.
To kick off the series, Polish children’s book author Piotr Karski is creating a world of shadow puppetry where analog and digital visitors encounter one another on a shared screen. Karski, a graphic designer based in Warsaw, writes and illustrates children’s books and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards. His exchange with the Buchprojekt collective is made possible through the support of the DAAD Arts and Media Program. Following his exhibition, Brussels illustrator Anne Brouillard and Berlin author Nele Brönner will be developing other digital- and analog-based projects.
RoomMates is funded by NEUSTART KULTUR and is also supported by the DAAD Arts and Media Program and the Berlin representative of Eastern Belgium, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, and the Region of Wallonia.

The exhibition runs from April 17 through May 8.

Sound and video installation

Matana Roberts’s immersive sound and video installation addresses the turbulent political events of the past year in the US: the presidential election, the Black Lives Matter movement, the pandemic, the storming of the Capitol and their ineluctable intertwining. Abstracted found-footage collages are combined with a massive loudspeaker installation to create a deliberately overwhelming situation: escalation and loss of control are reflected here as much as calculated manipulation and distortion of realities. Interwoven in every turn of this vortex is the Black perspective in the United States, persistent inequality, police violence and arbitrariness. And yet Matana Roberts still leaves audiences with hope and a strong statement for collectivity and the power of the people.

Matana Roberts was music fellow of the Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2019–20.

New in Town: Affonso Uchoa

Born in São Paulo, in 1984, Affonso Uchôa was not widely known by international audiences until “Araby” premiered in competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam, kickstarting a successful global run, collecting laurels from Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema, Viennale, FIDMarseille, Indie Lisboa, and rave reviews along the way. Its follow-up, ”Sete Anos em Maio” (Seven Years in May, 2019), won an award at the Burning Lights International Competition at its premiere at Visions du Réel, and has since thrived in festivals such as Toronto International Film Festival, Jeonju International Film Festival and Film Madrid despite its awkward run time of 42 minutes.

Affonso Uchôas films refresh the political vocation of Latin American cinema, pushing it toward a radical self-reflection that does not refuse narration, but instead pulls it from the frail fabric of daily life. He will be in town till the end of August; a film evening at Kino Arsenal is planned.

Filmmaker Affonso Uchôa is a 2020 fellow at Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD.

Streaming-Platform

Streaming Platform

The development of pandemic-compatible formats was the common denominator of a series of projects made possible by the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program within the framework of the International 2020 Relief Fund for Organizations in Culture and Education. One of these projects is Aflamuna (“our films” in Arabic), a free streaming platform, created by Beirut DC, for sharing independent Arab cinema with audiences across the world.

Each month, a new curator explores a social, political, or cultural theme through a hand-picked selection of Arab films. The streaming offerings are accompanied by film essays and online discussions; the films are available worldwide for a limited time.

Aflamuna is supported by the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office within the framework of the International Relief Fund for Organizations in Culture and Education, the Ford Foundation, the Sundance Institute Respond and Reimagine Plan, and the Eye Filmmuseum.
